Speaking as someone who's worked for a few hardware companies back in the days, and did some fiddling around with electronics before college (OK, got some mad soldering skills out of that) and my family was also in the business, I think much of the rest of what you say is wrong including on salaries, but I don't have real knowledge of the latter today.

So I see "sharing schematics, drawings, and BOMs, and assembling the computer/printer/whatever together your own bad self...."

And I also see "and then a miracle occurs" where a bunch of surface mount parts get placed on a (multilayer??!?!!!???) PCB and soldered into place.

See also connectors, cables, and all the fun that comes with them and how they too can fail. I see people tearing their hair out trying to debug all the things which can go wrong.

You're also going to either go crazy trying to buy the parts in tiny or normal quantities which will be insanely expensive, or now you're back to a company buying them in normalish quantities and parceling them out into kits, along with PCBs that I hope they test.

And not entirely cheaply because they'll have to do something about customer support for those debugging issues, which can also include replacing damaged stuff.

For profit companies have an implicit advantage there, if they completely screw up they stop making money. Whereas Gnu Hurd is still on its road to nowhere thirty four years after it formally started.

But with money also comes temptation, see the Raspberry Pi for example (switched over to prioritizing companies that embed their stuff, is now doing an IPO).

I can't think of any high volume open hardware projects that either avoided that fate (of course Raspberry Pi actually wasn't very open, but that's in part on Broadcom etc. and the latter's making too many of a certain chip) or got anywhere, see for example lowRISC which was founded to make a very interesting RISC-V chip, as in they talked about what it would cost to make N-thousand working ones, and ended up being a consulting company.

See also how much it costs up front to make good injection molded plastic parts for packaging, that's generally needed for high volume parts for consumers. Every time you see something that's metal, CNC machined, and/or 3D printed you know it's going to be extra expensive.

Sure, public health measures including clean water and sanitary sewers, better medicine like antiseptics in the later middle of it (we had to develop the germ theory of disease) did a lot statistically to increase lifespans, but see for example what crushed Calvin Coolidge. His son followed an all too familiar path, played tennis without socks because he was in a hurry, got an infection, and the best of US medicine at the time couldn't save him and he died in a time easily measured in days.

The development of safe and effective anti-microbials starting with the sulfa drugs in the 1930s and then antibiotics in the 1940s, first available to civilians in 1946, effected a sea change which was probably capped with polio vaccines. People now reasonably expect healthy infants and themselves to live a long time, generally at least into their sixties, and there are often clues if you won't, or will die sooner than "normal."

@okabe_rintarou @sun Migrate does the one thing you can't do with data import/export, moves your followers. Since you have only 94 and I had more you should be OK. Although as you saw, not your followers' timelines!

I also observed failures to follow were queued, can't remember about followers, check my timeline about then. I think due to sites which weren't up then eventually came up.

And of course dead accounts and accounts on dead or moved sites (like SPC->SPW, or noagendasocial.com which appears to now be noauthority.social) won't be moved or followed.

For your followers, you might have to hunt them down and DM them about the opportunity to follow you on SPW. If they're people you follow, manually create a new list to import (under Preferences, the upper right hand gear icon). For dead account on a live site I used the search feature and then clicked on "Request sent" to tell SPW to stop trying to follow, in case there's a retry mechanism.

I found keeping records in files using data export and for followers just copying from the page which displays them to be very useful. If you've got a working Linux, the text tools grep, sort, and com can be very useful, as well as a sophisticated programmers editor like Emacs or vim.

That this method won't reveal the need for a roof in a house, it's not something you use. Ditto code quality, until a lack of it makes it too expensive in time and/or money to modify.

(Lately people have tried to reconceptualize this as "technical debt," but with for example the US Federal government going a trillion dollars more into debt every three months I think that's a very hard sell.)
