    @SuperDicq @drq @a1ba Yeah, what Valve probably has is a proprietary license for Quake that they have very limited rights on.

    That said I doubt any proprietary license could prevent moving to GPLv2 (of course given you relicense your code under a compatible license).

    Because I think otherwise we'd have seen Quake under other libre licences than GPLv2 by now given how many games it spawned.

    While a proprietary license giving restricted rights even when it's also available under a libre license seems like business as usual for tech companies.

    (Also kind of wonder which company holds Quake rights currently, Bethesda/ZeniMax maybe?)

    @a1ba @drq @SuperDicq Well… isn't GoldSrc derived from Quake source code?
    So would have to either somehow manage to get a license under say MPL-2.0, or effectively just toss source code out they don't plan to use again (or do a Sun/Netscape/… and intend to make at least one version of GoldSrc ultimately under GPLv2).

    @ska @dalias Well first ones were Diffusion Models (like Dall-E) rather than LLMs and you can run if not also train them locally given a very beefy GPU (mine was beefy but not enough), and a willingness to use stuff like TensorFlow/PyTorch (I don't have that either).

    And as much as I can like generative art, I much prefer it when it's somewhat programmable (say with shaders or CPU rendering via writing into a C buffer), and so far it seems like Diffusion Models and LLMs are too unwieldy in comparison.
