Right now you've got every Tom, Dick, and Harry making changes to the critical infrastructure for superfluous reasons. The GTK cocksuckers strip things out because "you don't need that," pulseaudio just got good before the edict came down to switch to pipewire, wayland has been in development since dinosaurs roamed the Earth and it's STILL in a different galaxy compared to Xorg's proven robustness, and worst of all, glibc has no stable ABI so you either statically link things or accept that you live on top of shifting sand land.
You want the forbidden suggestion? GNU/Linux needs an equivalent to win32/windows.h. Write once run forever, a stable API and ABI you can rely on long after you die, backwards compatibility that would make God blush. Then you can write a polished piece of software ONCE and keep it going forever and ever and ever. It's not even a proprietary software vs. free software thing, it's just a culture thing, and nobody ever got to be a COOL GUY in free software by keeping things stable and functioning and happy forever.
Also Total Corpo Death. IBM can't sell you support for infinity Fedora spins if your software is stable and functioning and happy.
