British society, I feel, has this problem where they feel that an outward show of respectability excuses the actual content of the message or action. The British Museum comes to mind, whereby the center's status as a world-famous locale of global art has long overshadowed the atrocities done to steal that art. And you can definitely say the same about the US and Canada, to at least some degree.

Some days I feel that World War 2 would have been a very different matter, had the Nazis simply been more 'polite' about their acts.

All of which is just my long-winded way of saying, 'Great garters, how dare she be rude about the people she supports killing!'

Who says there has to be a cap? There might be a lot of different shows, but there are a lot of different fans, and some folks are in it for entirely different reasons. Heck, the same argument could have been (and has been!) made about sci-fi space operas, and while I'm agnostic in my likes -- Farscape and Battlestar Galactica are equally on my watchlist -- there's pretty much always room for more.

Darnit, I miss Tabula Rasa.

I can say that both City of Heroes and Phantasy Star Universe run wonderfully through Lutris/Wine, though perhaps they're not the best examples, being Old. The only real frustrations I've had of late with my Deck are Operation Neptune, because whatever its setup, it doesn't like to play the sound for me (some setting or another, and good luck finding the right command line switches) and Stardew Valley -- setting it up with mods is a bit frustrating. Works fine in vanilla, so I have a farm going on each side.

With the continued enshittification of everything Windows, I expect the gaming market to be overtaken a bit more swiftly than most.

Anyone who extols the idea that 'proper training' prevents people from making mistakes, ever, should be immediately fired, preferably in a ballistic manner.

Human beings have this natural tendency to screw up! Sometimes we do so cataclysmically! And one of the benefits of diversity and inclusion is that when one person screws up, we don't just mill about in a homogeneous herd, someone has the ability to recognize the fault and the skills to fix it.

Meanwhile, Boeing execs who can't see past 'Money == Good' are making unilateral decisions and getting people killed through their blinkered incompetence.

This is where one of Hamilton's statements stuck with me -- the assertion that such systems are software, hardware, and peopleware. And these three are distinct! You can't treat people like hardware, we operate in a stochastic and, frequently, incomprehensible way.

Hamilton wasn't saying that the error would happen, just that it had a chance of occurring, and therefore steps should be taken to minimize the likelihood. Precautionary measures, because while training is important, so is the setup of a system, and it should always be configured - physically or in software - to reduce the likelihood of a disaster as much as possible.

And definitely: people who are more at risk of Bad Things happening have fewer blind spots when it comes to those same Bad Things happening to someone else. We able-bodied people need, as a whole, to learn to start listening.

Like putting up a robots.txt file, it pretty much requires that a level of trust be held betwixt the two participants.

Doesn't take much to figure out why they use the term, either. Calling it a 'war' implies that it has two sides, and isn't just a million little murders. Calling it a 'war' implies that the oppressed, the victims, are fighting back in violent ways. Calling it a 'war' all so often implies that it can be, at all, justified.

And if there's one thing these ghouls adore, it's self-justification.

The obligation towards childbearing -- and just the bearing of children, not the social and economic rearing thereof -- as a primary moral virtue is to my mind one of the strangest results of the social structures in which we so often find ourselves. Endless reproduction as a chief moral virtue? That's not how you get a human society, that's how you get a Von Neumann machine, and I'd rather not see us becoming the moral and ethical equivalent of a paperclip maximizer.

There was a certain expectation by my family, who on my father's side is predominantly Catholic, that we would all have children. Exactly one and a half of my siblings have had one (1) child apiece, and the rest of us have opted against it.

This may have been a different matter if they weren't consistently voting Conservative for to ensure that any child we raised would be even less well-off than us.

A rare post that's NSFW-adjacent without being so here (I don't do NSFW in public, myself), but, so help me Eris, if I see anyone on my timeline arguing that sex workers shouldn't come to the #Fediverse from Twitter because 'what if they don't follow community guidelines', that's an instant block and quite probably a report.

I have been on here for quite some time alongside kink- and NSFW- and 'hey, I'm proud of my body now, lemme show it off'-focused communities, and I have not once seen a bare boob which wasn't content-warned, let alone anything more risque.

These concern trolls are implying that sex workers don't understand consent or norms, when I have never once met anyone else quite so focused around the implications, consequences, and effects on other people of their every action as your average sex worker.

So don't anyone here even dare to imply that those who are probably the most at risk of sexual violence don't grok consent.

I occasionally feel old, but most of that's when someone tells me that, for example, Nevermind is over the legal drinking age in the US.

Other than that, screw it, I'm just fine as is, and I'll keep on trucking while my back keeps popping.

Turns out that when they allow people actual freedom, instead of telling them, "You're free! To be cishet, white, rich, male and dynastic, if you can", people actually appreciate it.

If the Democrats had any spine at all they'd run on a platform of personal freedom and autonomy with a side of healthcare, student debt relief, standard of living assistance, and labour restrictions. You know, those things a government can do to actually benefit people, instead of funneling more money into the overloaded pockets of every capitalist shitstain under our benighted sun and a military complex so overwrought that a rococo blacksmith would have a case of the vapours.

But that would be unpopular amongst, shall we say, certain crowds who will never vote Dem in the first place...

One of my favourite quotes is that 'communication is an act which takes place between equals.' That is, two people, on equal footing, with a mutual understanding that both sides of the discussion will ideally be fruitful and in good faith. In Discordianism and anarchist philosophy, that's known as the SNAFU principle, because two individuals on a corporate or hierarchial ladder are rarely so equal and so can never have a completely honest discussion.

Trying to convince a zealot fails all three tests consistently. It's not on mutually equal footing -- they consider themselves inherently superior in all ways. It's not in good faith -- they will say anything to get you to give up or agree. And with those two points, it's evident that the zealot lastly does not consider the interlocutor to be a person, but a game to be won, and ignoring the question is just one way to do that.
