So one small piece of good note on the current tea cup storm that is JK Rowling going on her "trans women are men" hobby horse.

Her saying so to India Willoughby and doing so in such a degrading and mean fashion is the first thing that has broken through to most of the 50-80 year old people of this little sea side town and has broken the spell she had of "reasonable" and she is now seen as someone who has become obsessed and fanatical.

They did not hear anything of the holocaust denial prior, or anything else of the past year or two really.

It was her being mean to India that got actually reported on and it turns out a lot of british people dont like meanness.

so yeah, just to say.. dont try to stop your enemies when they are making a mistake.

Each new article in the BBC about her poking at the Scottish Hate Laws by continuing to misgender specific people and Sunak backing her may all seem a tide against, but her meanness specifically is actually getting heard by a lot of cis people who hadnt before.

@julieofthespirits exactly, as soon as it becomes a real person its very embarrassing and rude to even have such unkind feelings.

@siege the specific thing about British transphobia is that it's so widely permitted to the extent it's just Acceptable Voices Having Concerns, right? So you can get hours and hours of upper class white women having vague abstract rants about minorities. But the minute it seems Not Acceptable because it turns personal (this, or Sunak's comments about Brianna Ghey) it's not

@theogrin yes, the thing is that many people just dont hear all the parts about her funding all these cases and all the stuff that flies around on the internet all day. It has to be reported in the Times, or the Guardian or on the BBC.

British society, I feel, has this problem where they feel that an outward show of respectability excuses the actual content of the message or action. The British Museum comes to mind, whereby the center's status as a world-famous locale of global art has long overshadowed the atrocities done to steal that art. And you can definitely say the same about the US and Canada, to at least some degree.

Some days I feel that World War 2 would have been a very different matter, had the Nazis simply been more 'polite' about their acts.

All of which is just my long-winded way of saying, 'Great garters, how dare she be rude about the people she supports killing!'

@theogrin i think you have to understand they basically havent heard anything from Maya Forstarter onwards, the last they really heard was "JK Rowling comes forwards saying she was in abusive relationship and is constantly attacked by trans activists online". Internet news and british radio / print news is such a different fish.

I feel like a lot of people wouldn't care about those even if she had been reported on. Wealthy 'philanthropist' (she says with sniff of disdain) donates to Tory cause? That's not news, that's a blurb on page 8 of the Telegraph.

@siege @theogrin exactly; we all know about it because it’s in our own best interest to pay attention and we live networked on the internet with other trans people & like meerkats we signal danger to each other. It’s not visible to most cis people because a) it’s mostly no skin off their nose & b) it’s not in the sources they look to for information, which gets us into institutional transphobia etc but the tl:dr is ‘of course they don’t know, why would they?’
