@ehproque Proper AC is not that expensive to run (heat pumps are very efficient), especially as a lot of people also have solar (like we do)

Often people keep houses to like 25°C or so.

Because we’re a real desert at night it usually cools down quite a lot.

Also a lot of the year it is very dry here (<20%), so you can use “swamp coolers” (basically a fan blowing into water, with the water evaporating extracting heat energy from the air, therefore actively cooling it) which are very cheap to run (really its just a fan and dripping water) and work quite well.

@ehproque so I’m in Tucson, Arizona and we have 5 months over 40 (on average) and 4 more months over 30. Without AC it would mostly be uninhabitable.

(Indeed large-scale settlement didn’t happen until the advent of AC. Even native Americans abandoned their permanent settlements before Europeans came here as there was a notable local climate change, I think leading to droughts.)

Put some fucking solar panels on the roof and have some heat pumps and you're just as sustainable with zero emissions.

And you can actually cool and make people comfortable and safe, not just pretend to cool.

I hate these articles so much, guys when it's 45ºC and 95% humidity a "gentle breeze" in the building won't keep people from dying.

I feel bad for attendees of that conference, they paid money to go there to hear about Ruby on Rails and the keynote from the project lead is about how he has literally retired from programming and is using only Rust anyway
