Is there a way to see how much #FreeOurFeeds has raised?

Isn't the better solution to normalize everybody on #bluesky bridging to #ActivityPub, so that if they start to "go evil", folks can move here and tell everybody there that they did so and to join them?

If most are not bridged as is the case today, moving here means losing lots of connections. Most will resist doing that until it gets truly desperate. But if most are bridged, the cost is negligible. And this will keep BS cool. #SocialWeb

town square just as an idea. what I think people originally loved about twitter. lots of big brains and journos and govt folks talking civic stuff, but any idea (or linked article) could go viral. a little elitist tho. I want everybody.

i've thought that long-term, most people would be on local instances in the model of NextDoor. they confirm where you live with postcards. or at least used to. if we keep instances small enough, we don't need open signup, right?

basically his point being that they are spaces where the people there control the conversation, not some outsider. he doesn't seem to understand we exist, but this point is exactly why I think the fedi killer app is the town square. I wish I could get his ear to explain this place, esp if we could make it more non partisan and non ideological.

I feel like Musk served his purposes well by buying Twitter and destroying what passed for a decent public square. We're now much more so in separate silos, huffing our own exhaust. There are lots of other reasons people aren't on fedi, but the culture of refusing to allow bad ideas/info in our "spaces" isn't helping. Without algos and with aggressive moderation of harassment, we could be the place where all perspectives live but nobody is forced to ingest bullshit. Like the open web. #SocialWeb

my position is we need to be harsh towards harassment but very permissive towards all other posts. we're like the web and email. let people browse what they want but help users to deal with unwanted tagging. unlike the other places with algos, you're not going to see what you didn't kinda ask to see. again, outside of tags.

and this all serves free expression, inc being harsh on harassment. letting that go will drive users away or keep them silent. another form of censorship imo.

I might be wrong about this "everybody having good faith conversations with people who disagree with us to solve our civic problems" idea. Too many of us might have egos too fragile for that. #LiberalValues

I love the integration between the pocketcasts website and app. incorporating fedi would be another step forward, but I think services like #peertube have a lot to learn from pocketcasts.

decentralized media struggles with figuring out what's a good "homebase" for users. instead make it a website based on the app. then link it to a fedi account perhaps.

The original sin of the fedi is that it started off as mostly a bunch of tight-knit communities that could also talk to each other. Being on a server felt like you found your people. Moderation was strict. This all worked because few people were here.

But today is different. The revolutionary potential here for finally solving the attention control exerted by money over culture, is sadly in conflict with the experience and expectations of the people who made it great. #FediverseHouse #SocialWeb

Maybe it will take shit like #xitter being down when #NFL free agency begins to get people to stop trusting them and move.

We're still thinking about this all wrong, and it's making all the cool stuff we want to do more difficult. The fedi is not about communities. It's the public square. Communities control their membership. A fedi server is almost never a closed place, but a portal to the entire open social internet that also grants you assistance with moderation. Until we accept something like #matrix as the way to do groups with decentralized ID, we're gonna keep making this mistake. #FediverseHouse #SocialWeb

Some things that he said he'd do, he's doing. Fine.

But some things that he said he definitely could and would, he isn't. Some things that we said he would (because of Project 2025 etc) but he strongly denied he would, he is now doing. And then he's also doing lots of things that he never brought up. All while he clouds every promise in lies, jokes and trolling. And constantly challenges legality at a level never done before by a president.

That's the chaos we keep talking about. #Trump

I think Trump and Vance look like assholes for not allowing Zelensky to talk. We have not been having an honest conversation about this conflict and the US involvement there since at least 2014. I need like 3 hours of this. #Ukraine

Again, #bluesky can censor. They have a centralized relay that can shut down anything. Taking VC money means maximizing profit, which will mean the largest possible network with content control and the fewest possible moderators. However this happened, more of it is inevitable.

But not on fedi. Like the web, you'd just need one of thousands of servers to host it. If you value free expression, you need to support real decentralization, #ActivityPub and the #SocialWeb.

yea no. an #ActivityPub server is not a community. it's a portal to the whole network that hopefully provides you a nice name but should primarily be chosen for its mod policy and cause you like/trust the owners. one personal account and maybe eventually another one for work, school etc. #SocialWeb

but people have lots of interests and those each deserve their own private group. via #matrix or #lemmy etc.
