AFAICT: The advantage of #bluesky #ATproto is that they support easy search and the ability to view all the network statistics in one place. They do this by bringing together all the decentralized data in one place, relying on there being basically one relay that everybody uses.

But this means that as/if the network truly becomes decentralized (and power over reach is no longer concentrated), you lose all of its advantages. So while it allows for decentralization, it encourages the opposite.

yea, mastodon dot social and bluesky are somewhat similar in this sense. I'd love if AP had separate data stores etc.

but ultimately, the way this all works out in reality is much more important than the theory (libertarians ugh). it matters more how most people respond to the tech choices AT/bluesky vs AP/mastodon make than what they COULD mean SOMEDAY MAYBE.

it feels like @Gargron and @evan understand/care about this more than @jay.bsky.team etc.

YouTube refusing to show ads for the #Musk documentary is a very bad sign. Everybody thinks that when the TV networks and streamers bend the knee, FCC dissidents like Kimmel or Colbert can just put it up on YouTube. That's not going to last. Also YouTube is obviously going to be the last of the big video networks standing when the dust settles. Competition among the billionaires is a joke.

Y'all better start fighting to make #owncast and #peertube matter like yesterday.

glad to see this newish account but I've been following @InTheseTimesMag for quite a while. I'm wondering what the difference is. both are awesome to have but not what imo the gold standard would be, an #APnative feed (where the articles are also social posts) that lives on something like their inthesetimes dot social server along with accounts for their staff.

kinda? they should say what they think is right and not change that depending on the audience or primary vs general etc. but without a better media environment and reforms like ending gerrymandering and final five ranked choice voting and finding a way to get everyone eligible to vote, doing so means my people are going to lose. just keeping us probably doesn't mean much at the governmental level today. so they play a different game to prevent the worst outcomes. it all sucks.

I voted no. imo this medium is about attention. being able to express ourselves but not force anybody to see anything. while a subtoot may seem rude, it preserves this balance. responding is only likely to create strife.

EDIT: I guess I should add that I often see nice posts about someone where I think they just didn't know that person was here or bridged from the ATmosphere. do you tell them without tagging the person or assume they already know?

yea. I'm kinda torn. imo private groups are not social media, but social networking. they should be done via matrix. but then I also recognize that most people care more about private groups than they do doing any more than consuming social media (algo media but also google and apple news feeds). so if I want people boosting and replying as part of a public square, I should probably promote systems that do both. something that is mostly like facebook but also somewhat like twitter.

I'm glad you're trying but I'm generally not a fan of adding complexity, esp when most people already can't handle choosing a server.

The fedi I want looks like the web. We'd be able to follow "horrible" people and not get cut off from also following friends and the "best" people on other servers. the problem is norms not tech.

and while I think the upset people have a very diff perspective on fedi (imo their goal is social networking not social media), I also get how the bots feel wrong. it feels like an algo, especially when you haven't considered we don't have other ways to solve the problem or don't care.

I want a big fedi and see social media as essentially about the public conversation and getting attention. I want hashtags to work well here without bots but otherwise can't understand the concern.

And of course the people who came late to the party with VC backing are playing nice. they always do, until they outlast the competitors and don't fear what users will do when they enshittify. it doesn't matter how nice their team is, they will get moved out as necessary.

the app view is nice but it naturally centralizes network power.

Somebody please go find out why Republicans voted against #Massie. I really can't understand it unless they still just love Trump blindly or were tricked by the massive advertising. He's like a perfect Republican with brains and integrity. Maybe he wasn't focused enough on local issues.

In the video in the post I just boosted, @anildash says #Substack is now boiling the frog in a slow move from email towards lock-in. And of course they work with Nazis etc.

What we need is an effort between newsletter publishers like #Ghost #WordPress etc and reader apps like @wallabag to build an ecosystem like podcasting. To make it smooth while remaining totally open. I'd argue for using #ActivityPub in addition to RSS to support boosts. Then we need decentralized money.

I'd like WP to output #APnative articles that I could directly boost or read later (or have read to me via TTS) via @wallabag. I'd like it all to work together so it automatically shows up in my queue there if I bookmark it here. An open but smooth ecosystem ala podcasting, but with the news feed and boosting of fedi built in.

This kind of interoperability is our killer app to move people off the platforms. Serving readers and creators better without lock-in.

I wonder if the fedi struggles because it's too good to be believed.

I think it's naive to think that the VCs aren't planning for monetization where despite how they squeeze their users for profit and credible exit is possible, most users feel stuck anyway. They want to be THE protocol everyone uses.

I think the parallel is with Google. The BS app view vs Google search and email. Main portals. A world of open protocols and people could leave, but they mostly don't. And @pluralistic says they are one of the best examples of enshittification.
