yea no. an #ActivityPub server is not a community. it's a portal to the whole network that hopefully provides you a nice name but should primarily be chosen for its mod policy and cause you like/trust the owners. one personal account and maybe eventually another one for work, school etc. #SocialWeb

but people have lots of interests and those each deserve their own private group. via #matrix or #lemmy etc.

I assume you'd still be able to link to a post, it just wouldn't show up like a QP. You'd still be able to do what you do now when QPs don't exist on mastodon.

I'd rather we have something like the ability to share a post but with a pointer to a reply. So it looks like a QP but only to your followers. To everyone else, it is a reply. And this means it stays attached but subservient to the OP.

I'd also like to see all replies rankable ala reddit. This would give us something like Community Notes, where the top responses are show up right under the OP. And the worst stuff for popular posts would be easily ignored.

Even with Element X? I found that to be a huge improvement and have gotten some friends on it since. I've used it for calling into my podcast (very limited) and never had a problem. Worse than mastodon?

Kinda obsessed with the idea that #ActivityPub & #matrix could link up to easily give everyone a universal ID for both public social media and private communication. That matrix servers could go beyond encrypted messaging to give us all the group functionality folks find in Facebook & Discord.

The civic primacy of social media won't be well understood and accepted until people have a simple and better way to handle their more closed community needs outside of the corporate platforms. #SocialWeb

I'm weird. I wouldn't recommend those servers but I wish federating with servers full of shitty ideas was more accepted on wider fedi. focus just on the harassment. only defederate from (or limit) servers that allow their users to tag people on other servers with shit (but those servers do that so should still be kept away from the wider fedi imo).

they don't. and you don't represent vast swaths of the country. most Republicans are not racist and most Dems are not like those on Libs of TikTok etc. but Trump and Elon etc play on that shit to distract while they lower wages ala H1Bs etc. MAGA seems to have forgotten all about that while Bernie (who you guys call a commie) is trying to basically eliminate the program. your rhetoric helps Trump/Elon do that. but keep enjoying yourself.

Please stop calling middleman payment services peer to peer. They require both parties to have an account and will inevitably abuse that power. And if they get big enough, that dependency will become destabilizing to market competition. #xitter

We need an open protocol for payments that doesn't come with all the problems of crypto. We should be able to send money as easily as email, but from our banking apps. That would be peer to peer. Huge benefits but a difficult collective action problem.

I am so damn passionate re the #SocialWeb because I see it as a realization of #LiberalValues at the level of mass communication. It promises to be the corrective for what Chomsky told us about in #ManufacturingConsent. That what we understand or think about the world came to be dominated by those with the money then necessary to reach a huge audience. The internet made everybody reachable by everybody else, but money still drove attention. Decentralized social media democratizes that.

A nice survey of our problems with attention today, without ever mentioning decentralization or the #SocialWeb. This shit seems intentional. I refuse to accept that they don't know we exist or have something to offer to address these concerns. They know we are the solution but also know that we are a threat to all of their business models.

not sure what the backend is for most journo outlets but I'd hope we could have a new AP server someday that competes with it. AP projects have been mostly decentralized versions of the corporate platforms but we could have a very different model here. designed around type of user instead of type of content.

I'd imagine most companies and organizations with a website today, will eventually want that site to also be an #ActivityPub server for their staff, where every article, video and podcast episode is an item native to the #SocialWeb. Especially journalism outlets. Is anybody building this? It's what we can (theoretically) do that no other platform can.
