I want a place that allows us all to understand each other and learn. that requires an open network but it also requires other stuff, like everybody to want to use it. so I oppose the harassing accounts you have no problem with (because imo you think equal discourse would be bad for your goals)

and that's why I muted you. you should be able to talk to whoever you want but imo you're here like an advertiser would be. to push, never to learn. multiple accounts serves that

it's not. having gone to two of those protests this weekend, there were a ton of stars and stripes. as a monarchist, I'm sure that really upsets you. do you live in a monarchy? otherwise, maybe you should move.

I think we need servers based on locality with a shared set of proven rules most of those kinds of servers can adopt. and that server software needs to handle what most people want to do. most personal accounts are on one of these.

but of course this requires breaking out of the dedicated app/server concept we brought over from the corporate world.

I'd love for this to happen but we're also stuck in the stage of replicating corporate platforms, instead of thinking about what we can do that they can't.

#ghost and #wordpress are doing this by making the article an AP item, instead of linking to it from a post. Maybe lemmy and mastodon should merge. most people don't post videos so maybe they don't need a #peertube account. maybe it should function more like podcasts. same with #funkwhale and #bandwagon.

possibly. to me the key has always been about creators, especially journalists. that's what drove early Twitter.

we need to make them want to live on their own website that's also a fedi server, no longer reliant on any corporate platform. have articles, videos and podcast episodes be natively #ActivityPub items. this keeps the door open for that and both #ghost and #wordpress are making progress in this direction. but we really need both #threads and #bluesky to federate by default.

the good place to debate politics could be a more universal fedi if servers didn't let their users harass users on other servers (or spam hashtags) and if servers didn't defederate for speech that wasn't harassing (where nobody who didn't want to be was tagged etc).

I say the latter constantly on my side of the divide (and probably get blocked or unfollowed for it). I don't know of anybody pushing for the former policy on your side.

I'm asking for a server/community of weirdos who maybe say shitty things to each other but strictly enforce a no harassing users on other servers policy. maybe it exists. I'm unaware of any even defined-as-conservative server that does that.

I desperately want that. I want proof it can exist to be able to better make the case to mainstream fedi that my "we don't need to defederate for stuff you don't like cause you won't see it" is possible. I want more views here.

our society would either cease to exist or have to become a police state if half of us enjoyed harassing others or watching it. a small portion of people get abused and deal with that by fucking with others instead of getting therapy. we should make mental health care cheaper and easier to get.

imo you're overthinking it. few even slightly right survive on mainstream fedi because none of the major servers will federate with a server with such users. so those users/servers either become part of the separate fedi (jerk fedi) dominated by assholes who want to bother people and should not be allowed to, or they go to X, truth etc.

I want a more politically diverse fedi. that will require moderation to focus only on abusive tagging, not saying bad or untrue things.

they are more decentralizable and decentralized than I thought they'd be by now, but less decentralized than they seemed to promise. we also have a problem with mastodon dot social on this front, but much less so.

this argument gets a little silly unless we're also thinking about why we care about decentralization. if it's possible ownership change and degradation, maybe only decentralizable matters. if it's avoiding censorship, being decentralized matters. etc.

you have to let media outlets say what they want, but what we can change is the media structure that defaults to giving them so much attention and money. broadcast and cable TV replaced with #owncast and #peertube.
