Finishing the Stories Carousel is the last major task before shipping Stories to our mobile app (TestFlight first).

We’re caching the carousel today and invalidating on Story view/create, but that’s a poor UX. I’m building a Redis-backed fanout + view state service that will generate carousels on-demand, cutting latency and scaling cleanly.

@Chaos_99 Yes, Sup will also support Stories and can be used separately with the same account while keeping Pixelfed photo only!

@Chaos_99 I understand that, and Pixelfed will give people the option to hide the Story Carousel. Still, based on how my friends and others use Stories, I’m confident most people will really enjoy them.

There’s something refreshing about sharing a fleeting moment without the weight of permanent attachment.

I will stop posting songs + lyrics, that is what Stories are for 😅

I have experimented with speech-to-text, but it's pretty complicated, though I do want to support AutoCaptions in Stories and on Loops using on-device models, so I will continue R&D 😎

I feel like Pixelfed needs to finish the Circles feature we started years ago, to allow users to easily separate their people and connections, while leveraging the rich features like Collections, Chats, GeoMaps, and Stories accordingly.

We have the scaffolding ready*, I just need some time 😅

Public Pixelfed Stories that can be viewed by anyone, even if not logged-in, are also on my roadmap.

You will be able to turn a current Story, or expired Story into a Post or add it to a Collection too.

Stories aren’t just coming - they’re coming in a way that feels true to the fediverse.

Memories allow you to browse your past Stories that only you can see

Public, personal, and permanent if you want them to be. When they land, they’ll feel like a natural part of the culture we’re building.

I will add new Push Notifications to compliment Pixelfed Stories, for example you may see new ones like:

- [username] shared your post in their Story
- [username] mentioned you in their Story
- [username] replied to your Story
- [username] reacted to your story
- Pixelfed posted a new Story*
- Dansup, TaylorSwift, Drake and 4 others posted Stories recently*

Pixelfed Stories 2.0 FAQs:

- You can add up to 4 elements (text, mentions and urls)
- Text is limited to 80 chars
- You can only mention accounts that follow you (until we handle this properly permission wise)
- Adding a link element to your Story may be restricted
- New Stories will be limited to photos
- Creating new Stories will be limited to the app until the webUI is refactored
- Elements won't be clickable on webUI, but we will fix this soon
- Stories 2.0 will federate

I'm ready to cry tears of joy, after several attempts and years trying to get Stories working like the familiar Instagram Stories, I finally got it right with layers, mentions, links and text 🥳

I have some backend work to wrap up later today, then I will be merging it and shipping a new TestFlight release with Story support!! 🚀

We will likely see some edge cases and bugs, but that's why we're only releasing to TestFlight, once fixed, we can promote to prod ✨
