Starter Kits (Loops) and Starter Packs (Mastodon) have a lot of potential to help improve and surface discovery + following and onboarding.

I know some of you think it should be opt-out, so you can more easily curate lists by adding any account.

But it only takes one malicious user to create a Kit or Pack that can be easily abused by others.

Just one person could ruin the whole feature and its perception across the network, and cause harm.

It's not worth it.
Opt-in prevents abuse.
Period.

@mariusor I included to the best of their ability for a reason, I'm sure they have valid reasons, as I know from Pixelfed, it's not easy to support things that other platforms do.

GotoSocial created the interactionPolicy for activities, but declined creating a FEP

Mastodon used the interactionPolicy and applied it to actor objects and will publish a FEP

Loops is using both

And the biggest projects like @Mastodon will work to ensure compatibility, no matter how popular your project is, to the best of their ability.

I've tried getting that plush Mastodon for years now, and I guess I'll just have to settle for the sticky note on my wall of a hand drawn plush with the caption "one day..."

When new users flooded in early 2025, I let my ego run the show. I was childish, and I disappointed a lot of people.

Then the next month, losing my dog broke me in ways I didn't expect.

But that pain brought clarity.

Over 8000 people registered to join Loops in the first 24 hours after I announced Loops, back in Nov 2024.

Like, before it even existed. It was just a signup form and a dream.

I applied to NLnet in early 2024 to build Loops and got accepted in Dec 2024, right after I launched the first alpha.

Then in Jan 2025, people complained to NLnet and tried to get my funding revoked because it wasn't fully open source.

Until I shipped it later that year.

And now I'm on round two.

I am focusing on the Pixelfed mobile app refresh before the webUI because most people use the mobile app.

I’m also fixing federation, collections, comment threading, notifications and more!

Loops Starter Kits only support local account at the moment, as I was waiting for Mastodon to finalize their spec so we can maintain full compatibility.

Working with @dave from the Mastodon team has been amazing, and I'll be adding remote account support this weekend.

Isn't it amazing how projects like Loops and Mastodon can work together to the benefit of everyone.

@tchambers @shlee The challenge with that is there is no universal way to opt-out for other software, unless we build a bot type account that users can DM, and even then, there would be no way to verify their attestation for other servers.

I do think a campaign could help bring awareness to this, and perhaps Loops could change the default privacy from opt-in to allow-all, but that would only affect Loops accounts.
