People who worked hard doing dangerous shit to build wonders vs a fake image of the already mega rich trying to build a way to fire us for a few more bucks. #AI
the potential of #ActivityPub to provide #DemocracyOfReach for journalists like @mondoweiss is so important. the public should have all the power to decide what stories go viral. not governments or billionaire owners of media or corporate platforms. we just need everyone on fedi (and federating with everyone who isn't abusive) to make that happen :)
if this was a company, this goal would be horribly monopolistic. that's why any competitor that claims to share this goal but is driven by profit can't be trusted.
we must understand why the Nazi bar analogy does not apply or else this goal looks like fascism. when we share a space (like the web) but others' views are never forced on us, the shitty voices don't dominate the conversation. no algos and moderating hard for unwanted tagging is key.
what do you think of treating them like the obvious harassers? report them and defederate servers that don't police them.
unwanted replies are the only real problem here (since we lack algos and otherwise control what we see) but lots of people don't recognize how they are making others' experience worse.
[the tough part imo would be doing this without leading to a norm where it's expected nobody is ever criticized etc]
would it be possible for podcasts to be built on #ActivityPub in addition to RSS, and for podcatchers to process it? then each episode would be its own AP item and we could boost them directly, not just link to them. I feel like that would open up a lot of other possibilities too. #podcasting2
I'm not against voting for Republicans but also opposing the genocide would not be enough in itself. If I thought anybody could achieve a long-term solution to give the Palestinians equal rights and peace, that might be enough to sway me despite disagreeing on lots of other issues. IDK.
some will always stay and fight but most won't. and the Nazi types enjoy the fighting. so the space will become shit.
the solution is to build spaces where being a Nazi is ok but being abusive is not. we do this in real life all the time. we live among jerks but they are not allowed to be jerks in our public gatherings.
but that kind of nuanced moderation is only possible in smaller rooms with enough mods. thus decentralization.
I think the analogy kinda makes sense when others can be effectively annoyed into silence or leaving. that's the process. but it's not enough to just be sharing the space.
Please explain why you still use the internet if you think federating with #bluesky is bad now cause #ICE joined. The web has Nazis too.
People don't seem to understand that on decentralized networks, horrible people also using it is only a problem if their shit is pushed at us. If their tagging others with abuse is tolerated. Otherwise their posts will be ignored just like most sites are. We don't demand browsers refuse to load certain sites or DNS refuse to serve them.
They're gonna tell you the #forkiverse is a community but if you really want that, start a #matrix server.
Every fedi server is less a place than a portal to a shared space nobody controls and whose culture is only what most of the people hanging out there decide. Your choice of portal is mostly about the protection spell you want cast upon you as you walk through. The moderation rules and enforcement processes that somewhat filter what you're able to see. But no algos will assault you here.
Maybe we need a better term, but all media should be decentralized. Like a website. Anybody can put it up and anybody can access it, nobody in between. Podcasts are like that. #Castopod helps. #Peertube does it for on demand video. #Owncast does it for live video. #Azuracast for radio. #Ghost for articles. There are others.
But our biggest need at the moment is in consumption. Better tools for those who want to access this stuff, manage it and handle recommendations. Great app developers.
