@pojntfx@mitchellh holy goats, hadn’t hear that dementia analogy before but that is exactly it. I’ve lost elder family to dementia and when you’ve lived with it you realize that it is so much more than “forgetting”, it is literal decay of executive, cognitive capability. Not sure i hould say thanks for sharing that, i’m now going to see it everywhere. 😳
If you have not come across this effort yet, or have not reviewed and signed on ... please take a moment and do so.
Bill C22 is as bad if not worse than it's predecessor attempt C-2, and the earlier implemented C-18 which had the exact opposite effect on Canadian online media presence than everyone (well, everyone but us already-federated folk) thought.
Consider that Signal Messenger has indicated it will withdraw access from us rather than compromise privacy. it's bad.
Excellent, thoughtful thread about how even many of us getting by quite well are doing so within a system that is doing its best to see that we don't. We are not as well as we *could be* and .. that's not our fault, but it's something we still have to navigate responsibly and not make worse for anyone else.
we can also 'onboard' a new community by skimming their public TL, picking a name, and sending a "hello" addressed to them from our home space - now they're federating. I just chatted back in a thread for folks wondering when they'll have a web/desktop interface to their social - they already do!
Fam, we can obsolete joinmastodon.org tomorrow and give Meta another kick in the shins if we all get custom apps and just be friendly.
Your "on my computer" way in to your app is going to https://findout.media with any web browser, and you should be able to sign in via the (possibly very different-looking) Mastodon Web Client, which is built in to the server framework under your app!
That is awesome. But ... I had to go digging for actual fedi handles to follow, the Threads link throws the "sign in to Instagram" baffle up in front of me. And a lot of us limit or block Threads.
We need to follow someone @findout.media in order to federate them in! I followed @admin, but remind people to go find friends there directly.
@evan Nominally, I just picked Fediverse Instance, except that's the one that comes closest, but none of those is the true object of my loyalty. When I gave it a moment of thought, the *loyalty* applies to a human or community of humans. I don't remain "loyal" to an institution or organization in the absence of a higher-order connection to it. Like, if a political party I have supported shifts badly in a direction I can no longer support, the brand is not what'll keep me there.
Thought here … #fediforum, #fedidev, #atproto builders who are deeper in the architecture than I can get…
Are there any self-hosting options out there that can literally just be the sign-in server for other services? Where’s our independent, federated “sign in with {Google/fb/linkedIn/mastodon}” option? Am I just talking about a Mastodon instance that doesn’t federate and doesn’t allow posting?
Maybe this is not even a need, I’m trying to assemble a systems theory map in my head.
The upside of a couple of the #fediforum presentations having a higher gravitational pull than usual today is that @jaz and I got a semi-private hack hour with @mapache to kick some @fediprofile tires and fam, one thing I love about FediForum is that there are So. Many. Ideas. that get their legs and start at a run.
Getting a coding agent to assemble the seaborn library bits and pieces to make my climate projection data make nice charts.
Certainly not submitting this to any code repositories ... 😬
OTOH, I now have reusable functions to run with any city dataset from climatedata.ca. Anybody wanna know their best and worst case scenarios for heat risk events through 2100? Southwestern Ontario is gonna be damned hot.
Dr. Bender just called out one of the “unacknowledged stakeholders” concerns I started noticing when I jumped into some systems-heavy classes last year. This hype-driven AI in all things wave is particularly risky in healthcare where it could lead to delisting patients for not being sufficiently compliant *with AI recordkeeping*.
That is abhorrent. These things have entered the Medical Devices space, utterly unchallenged and unregulated. Clinical Risk analysts nowhere to be seen.
@evan I feel like this one might have been clearer if you chose options that were either "up to" x%, or "at least" x%.
Wouldn't it depend on many factors *about * the project? There are A+ projects out there that are wholly on one person. And there are great projects out there that couldn't possibly be managed by less than a team numbering in the double-digits (like linux itself, or Python) and in those, a "core maintainer" could be much more PM or QA/Validation than coder.
Ha, I thought it was just us blue-haired oldies who remembered *plonk*. I'm only using it in my admin notes, and only in public if I'm sarcastiposting about the week's moderation adventures from a mod-persona account.
Generally NOT in interpersonal chat ... I stick with the "move on" part if I need to block and move on.
I'm also trying to take a breath and note if a "mute" is more appropriate, as those can be time-limited.
Yes, but unfortunately at the cost of recreating the sort of factions we've been trying to get out of for many years.
Gonna be a while, and a lot of pain, before we settle on an acceptable and productive moderate middle and start reskilling not just 'hackers' but users/consumers to be more aware of what their software is doing.
@evan Given that we started at X, we could've just called them A. None of us will be around long enough to make it BACK to X, so there's not likely to be confusion.
OTOH, are today's kids the alpha release version of our cyber-integrated species? 🤣
Great, we'll have a stable release candidate sometime after 2080.
It's either zero, or "as many as possible", until we get enough remedial civics education out there that your vote is only and exactly for your local MP/MPP in our system.
That parties have become like sports teams to the uncritical electorate is absolutely gangrenous in our system.
