"Reported for using too many hashtags"

We do have a limit of 60 hashtags per post, if you exceed that limit, the rest won't be autolinked.

Btw, the fediverse belongs to everyone.

The hashtag police need to calm down lol, people are used to them from Instagram.

@jmcs exactly! We don't have any algorithms in Pixelfed, so they are quite useful!

@dansup and hashtags are more important for discoverability in the fediverse since usually there's no opaque algorithm making random posts appear on the timeline out of thin air.

@dansup yeah Ive noticed the new players in pixelfed are doing the hashtag dump thing. No judgment but very noticeable ;)

      @johannab It's a bit tricky, I will admit.

On one hand, I admit that more than a few hashtags can be too much, but at the same time, they are used to this from Instagram, and asking them to change their behavior is unlikely to work.

Long term, a better solution is to separate them from the caption and make them easier to handle in other software.

Do you concur, or think we could go another route?

@dansup gotta say, i wish people would get UNused to them. They’re being abused to inject irrelevant content or outright spam . Blocking ppl right left and centre for doing that (its against rules & CoC on my instances).

@johannab We do have a way to solve this gracefully, I'm thinking that maybe we should keep the 60 hashtag limit, but only federate out the first 5 or 10 hashtags (the other hashtags will be rendered as text, not hashtags).

Would that be more reasonable for our fedi neighbors?

I want to maintain a good reputation within the fediverse, and not encourage spammy behavior, so do let me know, and I appreciate the feedback!

@dansup a five hashtag limit would be more polite, frankly. Figure out your actual damn real audience and learn to post quality stuff they want to see. Otherwise keep your crypto spam off my caturday and mosstodon!

@johannab Most posts don't even use hashtags, so I think there is that bias, if you actually seen the local feed of pixelfed.social, you could see the amount of photos and selfies, it's honestly so cool to see so many new people.

But I digress, we've seen rampant growth and I can understand your frustrations, and hope you know I am working on them.

@dansup theres potential to use the actual engineering to improve the social engineering - you have room to dampen the antisocial and predatory influencer-culture import by making the behavioural tactics less meaningful here. Pixelfed is already losing value for me as i see more and more use of it for memes and pictures of text rather than actual photos. Hashtag spamming ruins the network potential of hashtags, sort of a paradox-of-tolerance problem.

@johannab We can def add support for that (monitoring unusual hashtag usage), I'm working on a huge moderation update with a new moderation role, and dashboard that will be shipping later this month.

We have a pretty powerful moderation system, with moderation logs, interstitial warnings and appeals.

I'd love to discuss this further at some point, there is a lot of ways we can improve moderation and build on the existing tooling.

@dansup as a mastodon mod, and hoping to work as a PF mod once cosocial gets an instance going … a mod switch to alert to hashtag abuse, or to filter them right out on my instances, would be an appealing option to have.

@dansup i very much appreciate everything you’re doing! And i’m trying to navigate the waves myself, still, even after 7+ fedi-years.

I see bits of flotsam and jetsam that have swirled around since i was downloading and decoding alt.binaries off usenet. Some are not visible to many others and dont matter. Some are not visible to many others but matter much, because they’ve become embedded in the digi-cultural foundations we stand on, long before we built here. And they rot.
