@evan I think I am with you on the "no, but...", and I can see why others are not. If someone's "social network" experience has *only* happened in the time frame since Facebook and shortly thereafter Twitter turned to monetization-motivated algorithms, then their ability to conceive of different is limited. There is no distinction in most minds between "social network" and "social MEDIA" and treating those as synonymous limits understanding.

No kidding, I had apparently actually listened to those ones but forgotten, and now I've listened again AND need to pile those into my "slow the fuck down with AI in everything" references pile. "automation paradox" is being baked in to the whole stack right now. Particularly terrifying when I think of my previous medical systems roles, because we seem to have dropped any idea of regulating life-endangering tech, too.

As does a Human Factors lecture I attended last century (ugh) on the amount of money spent on psychological research to make fighter plane cockpits human-goof-proof, ON TOP of the extended, intense, and repeated training pilots go through.

One of the points in the early 90's was cars were becoming too complex for mere untrained humans to cope with, with next to no thought about the human-tech interface required.

@evan Missed this poll and I'm somewhere between Yes, but... and No, but ... because it kinda depends on how you define, AND how you deploy, "algorithms".

The mythical "global town square" does not exist, as humans have a finite capacity for direct relationships with other humans.

Topical, temporal or spatial communities shortcut this *somewhat* and we can expand our web and feel connected.

Feckin' heck. Yo, any of you lot out there "doing your own research" on this steaming pile of sociopathy that is "the Epstein files" better start scrubbing images from your downloaded materials. Happy to bet my lunch money that CSEM possession accusations against all those replicating the filebase for research and journalism are on DoJ's roadmap.

@evan This is an example of maladaptation at a fundamental level of cognition.

Our brains are not wired for asynchronicity or the dissolution of a storyline into fragments and tokens. We HAVE to fill in some gaps to make communication "whole" to us.

But most humans have neither the technical experience nor the self-reflective detachment to realize that is what's going on.

It's the cause for disturbing parasocial imbalances, lots of online harassment, "AI psychosis", etc.

Courtesy a climate-related account on LI, take a look at this. Just so's ya know, the current extent of our climate crisis and the worse that is to come was entirely a choice that was made. For us, not by us, but it was a choice.

@skinnylatte my husband and I visited SF once, years before we got married. Biked across the golden gate on a rented tandem bicycle.

We came to the conclusion that such an experience is a really good part of a pre-wedding test of the relationship’s resilience.

We also took the ferry back to the city. 🤣

I met a mini-Jake yesterday in his "puppy in training" jacket. He was very early in his training and just decided to pull his trainer straight across the mall at me. I got puppy chomped, he'd learned not to jump and sat at my foot until I asked if I could pet him then it was game ON.

Labs are such lovable dorks but they know their people. I've no doubt Drake sent Jake along for you.

ALL schools, primary through postsecondary are closed, and I've seen some people grousing about that and "it's not that bad".

Well, two vehicles this morning have launched right off the 7/8 flyover onto King St. below. 1 fatality, one serious injury.

Two resource/supply problems are making this very very bad.

1) The Region, Cities .. and I think the entire province .. are out of road salt supply.

2) The snow accumulation is exceeding the ability of available equipment and operators to remove it.

Thus, roads are dangerously slick, and the plows have only been able to bank snow at the roadsides, not *clear* it. This makes curbs and concrete guardwalls into ramps. Freeway cattle chutes and the flyover are now skate park bowls coated in ice
