LA Times: Deputies warned to decontaminate clothes after lead, asbestos found in air near Eaton fire
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department sent an urgent message out to patrol cars Wednesday afternoon, warning deputies in Altadena that, after days of nearby wildfires, the air is so toxic they should wear masks and decontaminate their uniforms before stepping foot in their homes.
Sent at 4:35 p.m., the message began “**Attn all personnel**” and said that the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s hazmat team reported the air in Altadena is “‘hazardous, containing lead, asbestos and other harmful particulates.”
Cyber criminals are currently exploiting the ongoing Southern California wildfires by using Southern California wildfire-themed lures for their phishing attempts and scams. Phishing is a type of social engineering attack that uses fraudulent messages to trick people into sharing sensitive information1, such as account credentials or banking information. Phishing can be conducted through emails, text messages, QR codes, phone calls, and voicemails.
Our local ham radio amateurs have been active this morning and are running the normal net on simplex, rather than just abandoning the airwaves because the repeaters are down due to power outages. 👏 👏 #hamradio
@mrdiamondj Having worked for one of the law firms that files these (as a technical expert), they file as SOON AS POSSIBLE because when you file a lawsuit determines if you are part of the legal team for the class action lawsuit.
TKR914 dropping exactly on this ridge here - IMHO they are pushing retardant onto the ridge to try to keep the fire from crossing out of the canyon above JPL, and threatening La Canada Flintridge overnight. #EatonFire 1/13/25 1655
"How could this happen" folks were *NOT* paying attention to the Santa Rosa fires, Thomas Fire, Camp Fire, Woolsey Fire (plus countless others) and the Lahaina fire. Anyone who hasn't seen the entire world has crossed a threshold is in denial.
If you're wondering how the other social platforms are going... Awash in disinformation. I am thankful I never saw anything like that here, congrats Masto-people-onians or Fedidenizens....
(claim that Oregon couldn't send firefighters to California because of not passing smog tests, folks 🙄 )
Generator safety PSA: ***DO NOT FILL UP A RUNNING GASOLINE GENERATOR***
Gasoline fumes are released when you refuel the tank, and there is a high risk of igniting those vapors from the hot exhaust of the generator. You should not only turn OFF the generator, but also WAIT FOR IT TO COOL DOWN.
(you can get devices to toggle tanks/etc. safely, but most people do not have this).
The worst time to cause yourself burn injuries (and worse yet, maybe set your neighborhood on fire) is during the middle of a disaster.
Daniel Swain: Following historic wildfire disasters in Southern California, a statewide dry spell intensifies and extreme fire weather conditions persist in the south
"We will rebuild" is repeated a lot after climate disasters nowadays. Sadly, i don't think you can "rebuild it back like it was" and expect different results and a repeat nowadays.
Personally, I think the Japanese have the right idea with "Tsunami Stones"
