Hi, magic fedi: does anyone know anyone with experience of locally opposing the construction of new arms facilities in the UK? Looking for any tips on strategy as I'm not sure where to start.
Please boost.

@mekkaokereke Where I've seen this discussed, it's been by women who voted for Harris, whose partners said they would too, talked a big game about reproductive rights etc but then just... didn't vote.
I don't know if that's a statistically large group, and I agree that the right answer is that if your partner just sits on their arse and lets your safety be jeopardised then they shouldn't be your partner; but I do understand where it's coming from.
@Tattooed_Mummy I'm hopeful that one day, most people who don't need to use a car will have stopped, which will make it a lot easier for those who do need a car (either all the time or occasionally) to get around more safely, quickly, conveniently, and with less worry about parking.
@GeofCox @Roadwarrior29 @CloudyMrs @ChrisMayLA6 These schemes do still exist. Many councils, especially in London, offer free classes for people who want to learn to ride or build their confidence to ride on roads. Sheffield has a fantastic scheme called CycleBoost which loans bikes (including ebikes) for free, and there are similar schemes elsewhere. It's a patchwork and some areas are underserved; these are mostly local government funded.
@Extelec @Edent That's normal. It's to confirm that someone else hasn't just stolen your phone. The rest of the thread explains, but this *is* a legitimate notification, it's just being misused.
@catch56 @183231bcb @fkamiah17 Yep! If you were looking to reduce gendered violence and abuse in women's prisons, the first thing you'd do is release most of the prisoners and the second is get rid of all the male prison guards. But they don't campaign on that because they don't actually give a fuck about the safety of women prisoners.
@fkamiah17 Went to check Vonny aka Jean Hatchet's Twitter to see what the other candidates said, and she's not on Twitter any more! Where do we think she's gone - spinster, truth.social, 8kun?
Leave it to this asshole to make me consider voting for a Lib Dem for the first time since my inaugural bad vote in 2010.
@ryanc @star I'm also not sure what the effect would be for anyone who doesn't already have a UK birth certificate, though I fear it's groundwork for a plan to start requiring a GRC before people can change their passport or driving license
@star @ryanc It's likely to mainly affect dual citizens who want to update their UK records after changing their documented gender in the other country they are a citizen of. It could also affect someone who has lived in the UK before, left, changed their documented gender and then came back
It's right on the gross intersection between "we don't care that it will affect very few people BC it's about optics, not effectiveness" and "we also don't care that the tiny minority will be REALLY HARMED"
@neil Alas, this story turned out to have been too-believable-for-its-own-good satire. Something for the snopes folks to get their teeth into?
@stavvers @Ailbhe @mekkaokereke And unsurprisingly, anti-trans campaigners are trying very hard to undermine it
@BruceMirken @joshin4colours @angiebaby Honestly, I don't think the solution is to seek it out. Although we don't have an algorithm throwing the absolute worst shit in your face for Engagementโข, the nature of federation still means that stuff that is boosted and replied to gets federated more widely.
We need to make the moderation tools and structural effects stronger so they protect everyone, and to be mindful that people who report harassment are telling the truth even when you've not seen it
@freemo @georgetakei To be clear, I'm not implying that Trump is planning a genocide against liberals; in pointing out the very effective role of dehumanisation in getting an audience to a point where they are willing to enact violence that they never otherwise would.
@freemo @georgetakei It's very different. What's being referred to here is the dehumanisation of a class of people, in a manner which is recognised as the fourth step of genocide. There's a big difference between insulting a person by calling them an animal, and using similar words to flatten an entire group of people into a faceless mass.
I recommend reading about the Rwandan genocide in particular, and the very significant role played by talk radio.
@samiam @actuallyautistic I spent a long time describing myself as "probably autistic", too. It's fine, there's no rush to come to a conclusion.
What helped me the most was seeking out lots of different accounts from different autistic people. I read lots of memoirs and essay collections and scientific studies (only the good ones, though - there are a LOT of very bad studies into autism). A lot of what I read didn't resonate with me, but...
@samiam @actuallyautistic ... I also saw all the things about my own life and experience that have never made sense, that have made me feel broken and like a different species from the people around me, represented in other autistic people's accounts of their own lives, often explained in ways I would never have been able to explain them. Nobody else, not even me, had ever understood me like that.
@cstross My favourite bit of reporting on this story:
"Chatham House Russia analyst Keir Giles said: โIt is known that multiple individuals have changed their name to Yevgeny Prigozhin, as part of his efforts to obfuscate his travels. So until we know for certain that itโs the right Prigozhin, letโs not be surprised if he pops up shortly in a new video from Africa.โ"
This story is absolutely bonkers. Arrested for standing still in a pedestrianised area while a driver was trying to illegally drive through it.
