speaking as an American, everything you say fits Europe perfectly. But in the USA we've built every aspect of our society on the automobile, and so then ev does become the band aid solution. While we pursue civic policies that encourage more dense living so we can also exist happily without a need for a car. then we can jettison autos entirely. It's just that that goal is further out, for the usa at least

very rarely they say pulling the plug on a brain dead accident victim relative is murder, which shows you the change in common attitude from terri schiavo's days

usually they go with "well there will be a brain soon." so i go "then you agree there isn't one *now*"

and then they usually get hung up on prevaricating over that detail

and falling back in stubborn denial to avoid rational thought, to using the lying terminology "killing babies." and i have to remind them we're talking about an embryo not a baby

In this letter to James Madison, Jefferson asks whether or not “one generation of men has a right to bind another,” either in the form of a financial debt or a political obligation to obey a constitution of laws not contracted by that individual. He comes to the surprising conclusion that any constitution (the American included) has to lapse roughly after every generation (actually, based on his calculations, every 19 years) since it was first signed and ratified. Thus, the American Constitution should lapse and become null and void in 1808. Jefferson believed in the principle that “the earth belongs to the living and not to the dead” which meant that previous generations could not bind the current generation to pay their debts, or require them to work in their father’s occupation, or to accept the laws and constitution drawn up by their ancestors. In his mind, “no society can make a perpetual constitution, or even a perpetual law”.

This is my one argument with you:

Who cares.

Tor needing funding is far more important than quibbling about how tor gets funding.

To me your concern is like complaining about the optics of the homeless collecting cans for redemption. Utterly ignoring why the homeless are collecting cans in the first place.

None of us are so precious as to look down our nose at funding sources. You give so I admire you for that. But I am giving you the honest criticism that tut tutting the source seems like quibbling.

the worst part of the "trans are child groomers" lie is that religious orgs contain groomers and worse. there are plenty of good religious people. but it is too easy to direct their gaze in fear at what they don't understand than it is to get them to admit certain ugly truths about what sits right next to them. they would rather hide that. and thus, they become something less than good people, like an acid on their personality and character. all powered by ignorance and fear

inflexible idealism is in a way worse than outright malice. you can oppose malice. how do you oppose "i don't care until the world is easy"

there's two replies to that:

1. the genuine brittle idealist who won't participate unless they get perfect

2. the concern troll voices who realize they can work on that inflexibility and encourage their inaction because the real world is too messy and they "sully" themselves by getting messy as well

links are always within the domain of the server you're navigating from. and if you want to see more of a discussion that originated in another server, you need to manually mangle the url

i don't like it, but it seems to be a design decision, which i can speculate a reason why it might have been rationalized. but indeed, it's subpar in terms of user experience
