@jgordon @judell I’m staunchly against relevancy algorithms. I don’t want any particular service to tell me what’s “important “ to read.
That said, I’m fine with people making their own algorithms that sort their feeds as they wish. People should define, themselves, what they believe is important.

Streams is a Fediverse app that allows comment control. It lets you:
1. Make public posts with comments turned off
2. Accept delivery of comments in restricted or semi-public mode
3. Turn off comments after a certain dateHonestly, this one feature is a godsend -- and I'm glad it exists *somewhere* on the Fediverse.

My colleague, @reiver, pioneered native video for the web.
For real.
Prior to his efforts, if you wanted to watch video, you had to install proprietary Flash. Thank God those days are over!
@reiver advocated hard for a <video> tag. Now web browsers natively support it.
Today, the W3C acknowledges his work.

I also understand—and empathize—that people often have no choice and must use Twitter.
If the choice is between making rent and eviction, I get it.
But that’s not everyone. If you’re privileged enough to leave Twitter, it’s your duty to log off forever.
That’s how you can thwart the spread of Fascism.

Look, I get it.
Nobody likes to be told that they’re helping the bad guys. Especially when they’ve spent their entire lives self-identifying as liberals or progressives.
You’re on the side of human rights, not the Nazis, right?
Well, this is where actions speak louder than words.
It’s time to stop with the hot takes and dunks.
It’s time to log out of Twitter and never come back.

@KansasGrant If people are still on Twitter, they are helping the cause of Fascism.

Internet services owned by billionaires:
1. Twitter
2. Facebook
3. Instagram
4. TikTok
5. SnapchatInternet services not owned by billionaires:
1. Email
2. IRC
3. BitTorrent
4. RSS
5. HTTPSo don’t tell me that walled gardens are inevitable and we should just accept surveillance capitalism as the price of doing business.

My problem with Twitter isn't that a particular billionaire owns it.
It's that a billionaire can own Twitter.

Fast Company reviews 6 Twitter replacements, and author @harrymccracken calls Mastodon the "heir apparent".
He says the Mastodon crowd is "friendly and engaged".
And he observes that Mastodon has higher interaction even with lower follower counts.

Prediction for Twitter's demise:
1. Twitter gets harder to maintain
2. Outages increase from once a week to near daily
3. Elon Musk pronounces that Twitter's old code is a mess that can't be saved, and he promises Twitter 3.0 -- which will be better in all ways from the old Twitter
4. A year later, Twitter 3.0 is released, and it's not like "real" Twitter -- but it's a pay-to-play platform
5. People finally realize "old" Twitter is not coming back, and go elsewhere -- probably to Mastodon

For nearly 20 years, Meta has proven time and time again that they care nothing for the open web.
And should they use the open web, it’s for sucking up as much personal data as they can.
So I’m not excited about Meta joining the Fediverse, and I’m skeptical.
