Who's seriously trying to take on Instagram's dominance rn? I don't mean anything in the open social web, as we are but a tear drop in the bucket.

I think the first part of this is even understanding what IG even is in 2026. Like its such a huge surface area. I'd say Telegram is probably the thing that's closest to having a dent in IG rn. Signal isn't going in this direction (for good reason)

All the people and projects building clients and servers for the fediverse and the atmosphere are great and I am glad they exist, but adoption is a hell of a problem and you need a team of many people to even attempt this. It is bigger then anyone who's working in this area acknowledges

I'd be interested in what's going on in countries where Instagram isn't so prominent

I think it's quite dangerous how much of a lack of response we have to Instagrams dominance

That we here on this super nerd alt technology space have not been able to make the slightest dent in their monolithic hegemony is frankly frightening

@dansup there is sorta a semantic nightmare going on with everyone using different languages to describe the same features, and when you start looking at the atmosphere now all manner of apps there are coming up with new words to discover things and ugh just thinking about now this will all work 10 years out

@dansup ah interesting ok, the names for this might be a bit confusing, usually when I think of playlists I think of collecting other peoples stuff for a playlist

do I buy a silly domain name that I don't need for 1$ and use it for something random? I don't need it but its so good... maybe domain names were the real NFTs all along

@apps I think having a fediverse search/relay is something that we really need and it's more useful if there is older content to search thru

I think building it in a way that is easily reused by other projects would also be very valuable

Starting to see this new acronym spread... I think its actually a pretty good angle to associate them with the current US facist regime in the minds of the general public
