I'm appalled to see the European Commission apparently embracing closed source, commercial, ID and age verification mandatory, social media today - in the very face of the technology sovereignty and online freedoms debates.

I think they've just thrown away the greatest opportunity to be the champion of all things open and collaborative, and to live and demonstrate their own values. Incredibly disappointed.

We need to move on from the obsession with growth as a proxy for “better”, or “success”; and instead dig in on, just improving.

It doesn’t need millions of people to make something better, it needs a few, or just one.

We make better communities by helping one another, fixing things; seeing things that need some love, and finding new ways to give that to them.

I’m not going to stop participating, or making things, or encouraging others, just because a thousand people don’t show up tomorrow.

The tech sector is massively failing older people.

I just spent over an hour trying to assist an elderly neighbour with her home phone. The provider’s website and contact phone number make it as difficult as possible to speak to a human, defaulting to mobile phone based text workflows.

The earliest the provider can have an engineer visit is in 3 weeks.

Very friendly humans when you talk to them, but a completely broken system.

And so it seems that the Taiwan issue was involved in the #RightsCon cancellation.

This is not good.

I was at #RightsCon in Taipei last year. I valued the humbling experience of meeting tech / human rights advocates with far more real-life experience of the space then I've had (I've been adjacent, but not travelled the same roads). I'd co-submitted for 2 sessions this year, they were not accepted so I'm not tangled up in this.

Interesting (?) that Sam Altman-backed KoBold Metals broke ground on a new copper mine in Zambia yesterday... 👀
