@cwebber Sorry to miss you in Berlin (I was really looking forward to seeing you IRL) but I look forward to watching your presentation this afternoon Christine.
And I hope we’ll have an opportunity to say hi IRL (maybe FOSDEM 2026?)
@evan asking for a friend (so she can make travel plans / childcare arrangements well in advance): will FOSDEM 2026 will have another Social Web track? This year's edition was absolutely EPIC... 😊
Working on a new signature to append to all my #blog posts:
written by a human ❤️
This is very DIY, I wrote it on a piece of paper, took a pic with my phone and sent it to my computer. You can still see the paper texture, but I think it adds a nice touch to it...
Thank you @Gargron and the whole @Mastodon team for implementing them in a considerate way, protecting original posters from potential misuse and pile-ons.
Are we calling them quoots? Or something else? (I love a good portmanteau)
I would love to start a #GratefulForYou hashtag, doing shout-outs to Fediverse people that one finds inspiring, enlightening, or just plain cool.
The online world can be a dark, overwhelming place and I just wanted to encourage others to shine a light on people who make a positive difference... to say, "I see you, I hear you and I value you."
Today my #GratefulForYou goes out to @sylvia, whose creativity & positivity always uplift & inspire me ❤️
Today I learned (by accident!) that @Vivaldi browser has a built-in pomodoro + break timer. My reaction: 😍
I was already smitten with Vivaldi, but this takes my love for it to a whole new level.
For aficionadas of the pomodoro technique (like me! I've been using it for a decade now) it's super convenient to have a visual display at the bottom of a browser window about how much time is left for a given pomodoro. Absolutely brilliant.
end of PSA - hope you're all having a lovely day ✨ 🌈 ❤️
In case you missed it: I've spent the past two weeks doing all kinds of #selfhosting explorations, as I strive to learn #Docker to move my Ghost site there (it's recommended for Ghost v6 and going forward).
Yesterday I shared a blog post about the peaches (highs) and pits (lows) in #MySoCalledSudoLife adventures.
I'm hoping my mistakes can be useful for fellow newbies 😅
A moment of gratitude for the amazing @vkc - whose video tutorials are simply illuminating.
As a clueless self-hosting newbie I often ask for advice here on the Fediverse… and get really helpful feedback but most of the time it reads like a foreign language to me (a non-dev).
Well, Veronica has perfected a way to talk to newbies.
Thank you Veronica for making me understand OpenSSH - at long last 🙌
@MediaActivist what a great post Jay! Thank you for the mention and the kind words 🙏
My current approach re: Bluesky is: I acknowledge its potential and impact but I still do not trust them… so if I ever publish anything there, it would be as part of a POSSE strategy… or I would fully accept that it would be ephemeral / no hard feelings if I have to abandon the account and its followers one day.
I think of Bluesky as the 🦂 in the fable of the Frog and the Scorpion
I quit all Big Tech platforms cold turkey in November 2024, post-election. I was using them once every blue moon (looking at you, Instagram, Threads and LinkedIn) but I basically deactivated or deleted all my accounts, without any announcements.
Wondering if I should start cross-posting to LinkedIn & Bluesky... to get people curious about the Fediverse 🤔
ICYMI: earlier this week I wrote a blog post disclosing my tech stack… arguing that anyone who writes about technology should be transparent about the tools they use.
TL;DR: I’m doing well on the software front. Hardware? Not so much: 🍎
