it runs @postmarketOS, so thanks to everybody who contributes there. it's really nice to have people who try to understand these devices and allow us to take them beyond walled gardens and planned obsolescence.
also thanks @paupowpow for designing the web page and convincing me to finally show it around
@ryanc doesn't that depend on the attack scenario? my main worry is that my user profile ends up in one the tracking databases of commercial surveillance merchants. they are not going to put up a post-it that someone with an unusual fingerprint may just be me and to double-check for non-changing attributes, but create a new profile because that's way cheaper and good enough for their main use-case
i'm really excited to show https://compost.party to the world! it's a web server running on an old, broken phone, getting energy from the sun using one of those portable solar chargers that you may also have lying around.
soooo in order to install an os of my choice on my current xiaomi phone, i had to register with xiaomi, give them my e-mail address and phone number, prove that i have a phone with that number multiple times and finally install windows in a virtual machine, where i narrowly avoided having all of my activity tracked and sent to advertisers.
do any decent android phones at the moment come unlocked?
i know that people brought up the story of google supporting xmpp in google talk for just as long as it suited them in the current #meta discussion. what i didn't see brought up: facebook chat actually supported xmpp as well (… for just as long as it suited them). the reasoning behind it was to "integrate it everywhere", i.e. make it harder to avoid it.
@websick@raccoonformality@schrottkatze zulip looks pretty good as well and is public & searchable. most importantly i think it should not close off the content. giving you the option to host & migrate elsewhere, using an open protocol with different implementations, things like that are really helpful in ensuring that the lore stays online and accessible
I like tech when it's not used to automatically deny social welfare. When it's careful, helpful, maybe weird or surprising. Always antifascist.Kudos if you interact with me before you follow me.
