Lots of talk about Ghost today, and rightly so, but don’t forget that a little open source framework @fedify made the ActivityPub plugin possible.

Piefed has a new official test instance and the url is perfect.
The creators of WeDistribute have announced a newsletter, Relay, that will provide deep dive content by the core team as well as guest writers each week, about all things social.
Subscribe now, the first newsletter coming soon.
Digg is back from the dead, officially launched in the App Stores.
It’s like Lemmy/Piedfed but centralized and with AI everywhere.
The one thing I do like are the badges you can earn, it’s kind of fun,
Here's another cool feature of Bonfire. One account, many profiles.
When you create an account, you can create multiple profiles, each with it's own unique followers, content and settings (and emojis!).
1 account. 1 password. Many profiles.
Ownership of profiles can be shared with others. A news publication can share posting responsibilities, for example.
@Gargron Better than a labubu any day of the week. :mastodon:
PieFed continues to gain integrations with Lemmy apps. Blorp (love the name) is the most recent addition, initially in the web app with a TestFlight to come.
What is needed to improve it? A streaming endpoint? A "pull all replies" button that auto-updates, displays them as they come in?
This will require front end updates to every client, which will obviously each handle this a bit differently.
What we've seen in the past tho, like with post quotes, is that once a single app figures out a way to represent the process, the others follow suit.
Right now the experience is a bit awkward on most platforms:
* Open a post detail view
* This triggers a request to pull down missing replies in the background.
* Sit and wait X number of seconds/minutes, hope the reply task is finished, refresh the screen - and maybe some/all of the extra posts are downloaded.
Not the best user experience.
Mastodon's latest version has the ability to fetch missing replies from a conversation (under an experimental flag, not enabled by default).
This is a big deal, especially for smaller instances. Mastodon joins other platforms - of which I know of: Streams, GoToSocial, IceShrimp.NET and Bonfire - that pull back replies on request.
The hard work on the backend is done, and now there needs to be a discussion about how this interaction works as part of the user experience.
In this story, a curious use of “the Mastodon” has me giggling.
> With profiles, you can now feature specific hashtags so that people can see all the posts you’ve tagged with those hashtags, the Mastodon says.

PieFed is seeing a surge in new users as a prominent Lemmy server retires, lemm.ee

Haven't turned on Federation yet, but my Bonfire instance is looking good. My second install of Bonfire. I can tell you two things: Installation was much easier this time, and performance is much better.
One note, Bonfire recommends a hungry 8 GB of memory to run, but with that amount, it runs nicely so far. I'll keep you updated, hoping to turn federation on by next weekend. (This will be an invite only instance for brave individuals that want to assist with testing)
Want to try out Bonfire? There's an install party going on right now - get help from the devs as you setup your own instance!

Bonfire, by default, has federation turned off when you spin it up.
I think this is a good choice. It allows you as the admin time to configure settings, add policies, artwork, etc. - make sure all is working, before you start knocking on other people's federated doors.
@tchambers @renewedresistance @newsmast @surf @rimu @evan My concern would be how it performs with large numbers of actors in a collection. You’d have to have pagination configured for sure. It might end up overwhelming your regular timeline. Better to treat is somewhat like a list?
Upvotes…I mean I guess that’s just likes, right?
@tchambers @renewedresistance Correct, only federates with other PieFed servers.
In order to federate with say, Mastodon, or more likely Lemmy, they would have to implement PieFed’s logic, which can be found here:
https://codeberg.org/rimu/pyfedi/src/branch/main/docs/activitypub_examples/feeds.md
@tchambers @renewedresistance You will not be able to make @renewedresistence@piefed.social findable **outside of other PieFed instances**.
I did get lucky on Snac and it found that account, but I don't think it followed up and added the related communities, just the main account. So it will never show posts.
@renewedresistance Here's what I found out. PieFed Feeds are built to federate, but not many platforms know how to handle the request right now.
Think of it as attempting to follow a starter pack. Once you follow the pack, it sends your account "Add" requests for every entry in the pack. If the admin of the starter pack adds a new community next week, you'll receive a new "Add" request related to the pack account.
Pretty cool, I do wish more platforms supported this!
