Public communications (via platforms like Mastodon) are much too important to be in the hands of a handful of commercial Big Tech companies. Our team continues to engage in active discussions on these topics. We aim to help media associations to diversify their distribution by encouraging them to join the Fediverse.
We're excited to announce that @altstore has joined the fediverse! Their innovative implementation of ActivityPub allows you to follow updates from your favorite apps, demonstrating a new way to bring more apps to the open social web.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their generous donation, in support of our mission to create an open and safe social internet.
We’re thrilled to be bringing you a upcoming feature to help you find your people on Mastodon: Packs. (Or something… we’re still figuring out the name.) As always, we want to build this important feature for the community WITH the community. Read this blog post about our approach and let us know what you think!
In June, we proposed new Terms of Service for registered users of on our mastodon.social and mastodon.online servers. We did not do enough to consider the full impact of the terms, and the community was very clear that we needed to reconsider.
We've done that over the past few months. Today, we're posting an alternative set of terms, along with an opportunity for the community to provide feedback.
We appreciate that certain politicians have recently admitted their naivete in entrusting the voices of their governments to corporate / for-profit social media.
We’re taking another step in building a sustainable financial base as a non-profit. Today, we’re announcing new hosting and support offerings, tailored for larger organisations and public institutions. These enable organisations to own their social identities, on their own infrastructure.
@jplebreton thanks for asking about the rationale behind the choice. We've experimented with both designs, and went with text above after talking with community leaders, who use quote posts positively to give underrepresented accounts more reach. In the end, we believe having the ability to opt-out of being quoted and being able to retract quotes after the fact are much stronger protections against abuse than the position of the text.
@CelianGodefroid thanks for the positive words on the feature. We did consider opt-in/out, absolutely. Important note: defaults for post visibility and quotability only impact *future* posts. This means your past posts cannot be quoted. This is different from toggling profile discovery, which has an immediate impact. We're providing an early heads-up for people on these two servers (and anyone on 4.4.x elsewhere) that they can set their default visibility now, to prevent being quoted in future.
There’s documentation available today, along with an FAQ. If you’re a developer, draft documentation is available as well.
Quote posting will be available on [mastodon.online](http://mastodon.online) and [mastodon.social](http://mastodon.social) next week! We will be listening to your feedback on our new feature.
We’ve thought carefully about building this feature, and we hope it broadens your use of Mastodon!
However, you're in control: if you don’t want your content to be quoted, you can find the setting to prevent future quotes of your content under Settings -> Preferences -> Other (in Mastodon 4.4).
Today, we’re ready to show you the upcoming quote posts feature in more detail. We’ve put together a blog post with examples of how quote posts will work on Mastodon, ahead of early access on our own servers next week 💬 Full launch to come, in Mastodon v4.5
