@vmstan "can also be disabled with DISABLE_AUTOMATIC_SWITCHING_TO_APPROVED_REGISTRATIONS=true."
I don't know why they make these systems to circumvent. There is NO legitimate reason to permit instances from opting out of moderation.

@chris Sadly the #spam is not the fault of unpatched instances - it's free, unfettered registration.
#mastoadmin: Protect your instance by making your registration "Approval Required" until this all blows over here: /admin/settings/registrations
@dogzilla @shanie @fediversenews @chris @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs I never said anything about “demanding” anything from anyone. If you have a shit admin though, or believe they are not healthy for you, yes, feel free to change servers. Only weakness is you “lose” your previous posts but whatever.
But if you are an admin and don’t at least sit and listen to your server, why are you an admin of social media?
@dogzilla @fediversenews @chris @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs that’s extremely dependent on what kind of privacy violation, but privacy concerns interfere with basic functionality when the admin(s) of your instance get(s) lazy, really.
If you have active Admins and you can bring your concerns to their table, or they pay attention to #mastoadmin and do their due diligence, you will have a “safer” server.
@tauon @fediversenews @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @snarfed.org How to take a point and not at all understand what it means for $500, Alex.
It’s possible to do bad thing, so take control of your server and prevent it in an active way.
@chris @snarfed.org @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @fediversenews Lucky for you they gave admins an option of what you want done. Good actor.
A bad actor, for example, is likely already gathering your servers data and training it on a LLM as you have no power over THEIR server; you have *volunteered that data by federating*. Your ToS means nothing. Oops.
Someone truly worried about privacy would not be federating at all.
@snarfed.org @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @fediversenews A lot of people are upset about this but ya'll know, straight up, if your feed is live & people not auth'd can read your server feed you *don't have privacy*. Mastodon and the fediverse in general never said anything about expectations of privacy.
Snarfed here could have been a bad actor and never told you anything and as far as I know it's in the clear.
If you don't like it, block the bridge and move on.
Keep in mind "Invalid log level", first line in your log, is setting the logging to "emergency" level logging which does not default to "debug".
@mitexleo @dansup @pixelfed I mean it says that "syslog" is a valid configuration option but apparently it might not be. I see there's an "errorlog" option. Would be nice if these actually meant something to someone other than to the person who programmed it.
@mitexleo @dansup @pixelfed You may need syslog (which defaults to debug as per docs) which could be the firehose. Then just try to change the avatar and turn that off because it will fill up quickly. Search for the file name you uploaded in the log (or if that gets omitted, just find the issue manually) and see where the error is.
Hint: it’s usually always permissions.
@feditips Is there a ‘FediTips’ for server administrators? I’m sure there are dozens of things even experienced admins don’t know!
@gnitro Even though In Another World With My Smart Phone is super-cringe, it's really hard to not preferred to get Isekai'd to a place where I have all of the worlds knowledge in the palm of my hand.
@h14h @feditips @ThePlant @Mastodon It’s the part where “You liked that $20m donation? Yeah I got plenty of money, kid. If you want this money to keep coming, then you better do this for me” part that’s the problem. Not the donation itself.
I'm a "VTuber" that specializes in VRChat tutorials. Cyborg, not android; I got a brain case. What if the car and a place to park was meant for leaving society instead of joining it?
