Mastodon used to be emphatically anti-Facebook, now they're suddenly "this is no big deal".
It would be nice if they could confirm this isn't due to any kind of payment.

I'm not implying anything. I am curious why Mastodon's stance has changed so much in the past few years.
They used to have a very anti-corporate animation which ended with a parody of Facebook and Twitter (https://fedi.video/w/m9L9gYXJypnywSyChQLxnd).
This press statement doesn't feel like it fits in with that old Mastodon.

I mean it's not a substantive answer, because it wasn't really answering the question asked. It didn't deny meeting Meta.
And "there is little to comment on until Meta's platform launches" is almost word for word what someone would say who has signed an NDA on an unreleased product. NDAs generally forbid commentary on upcoming products until after their launch.
That's why I'm asking a direct question, in the hope of direct answers.

His attitude to funding seems to be that it is fine to take money from whoever as long as there are no direct strings attached:

Followers who believe you're an authority will accept it as fact regardless of the fact that nobody ever said it happened.

@Mastodon will servers be encouraged to have definitive policies on how data from their server can be used that are clear and understandable? I'd like to know that a friend boosting my post, making it visible to a Threads user, and they like it, does not give Meta permission to scrape and reuse my data.
Having such policies as part of running a server would be incredibly welcome if it's not already there.

If you receive money from an organisation, you will naturally tend not to want to criticise that organisation.
That's how political lobbying works. That's why companies donate vast sums to political parties, even without any direct deals or demands. By making parties dependent on them, the parties naturally tend to not tread on donors' toes.

@feditips @osc @ThePlant I'm curious - what platforms do you use? Unless it's like Linux or BSD or whatever, you're using a mass surveillance platform. Apple, too, collects vast amounts of data about its users, and lets the CCP control all of Apple users' data in China.

So if I parsed the blog post right:
- Meta can only get my public profile and posts
- No ads, unless my server implements them (they shouldn't)
- The danger of embrace/extend/extinguish is essentially nil
- Meta isn't going to gain undue influence over the rest of the Fediverse due to Threads, even after (if) they federate
I would say I'm okay with this. I might still block the domain, but I'm not going to worry about that too much at the moment.

@Mastodon it was obvious that Threads will be a data kraken but I still enjoy that they are pushing the fediverse with their inclusion of pubsub.
I gave Threads a shot this morning and I must say for now the community is pretty nice and the overall simplicity of the app feels good.
As soon as Pubsub is integrated I'll make the switch completely to mastodon and follow people on Threads.

That's the organisation owned by Eugen which also owns joinmastodon.org, the Mastodon trademark, the official Mastodon apps and develops the Mastodon server code.
I wasn't asking about Mastodon as a general network.

@Mastodon Maybe there are some questions but there are way more industry veterans who have been on the other side of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish plays like this who see it coming a mile away and are frustrated that you don't. Embrace Extend Extinguish always plays on the arrogance and ego of the orgs it absorbs. The Instagram founders didn't expect FB to break all of their promises and oust them while seizing control, either.

@Mastodon on the comparison with XMPP, XMPP loves on as the messaging foundation for many personal, enterprise & gaming platforms. Early on, companies like Antepo were bought & folded into commercial enterprises, Adobe messaging service in their case. A variant of XMPP lives in Zoom. The real question is, long term will ActivityPub interoperability have a viable business case or will the protocol & server implementations power smaller, isolated branded experiences?

If Meta donated to Mastodon the same way anyone else does, it's not clear to me how it would even be possible for them to attach strings, given my general understanding of how non-profits work.
Would it even be possible for Mastodon to receive funding from Meta through some mechanism other than a standard donation?

@Mastodon It won't last. Meta will pull federation from threads as soon as it feels it can. Back in 2009 I was a consultant to a proposal to the City of San Francisco Mayors office. The whole proposal was based around RSS and the ability to created posts and feed them between different social media platforms. Today no one remembers that Facebook supported and provided RSS feeds.
Ultimately Facebook/Instagram aka Meta only win if they remain a walled garden.

Does someone know the #fediverse works? How transitive is it?
Suppose server S1 federates with server S2, which federates with server S3, but S1 does not federate with S3. User U1 on server S1 sends message M1. User U2 on server S2 responds with message M2.
Can user U3 on server S3 see both messages M1 and M2, or only message M2, or none of them? Can user U3 reply to message M1 or M2 or both? If yes, will user U1 see it?
