@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io I don't know why more people don't just switch to Firefox. I haven't used Chrome as my main browser in close to a decade.

It's not hard. Nobody's forcing anyone to use Chrome.

@tchambers@indieweb.social @fediversenews@venera.social I think it very likely that most of the #Mastodon based #fediverse will eventually defederate. Even those who planned to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Here's why... threads.net is the instance. The only instance.

Let's game this out a bit. Imagine that "Libs of TikTok" gets reported for breaking the server rules of "example.social". That report will go to Threads, because it's their user. Threads will do nothing. "Libs of TikTok" will post something even more vile. More reports start flowing in. Threads again does nothing.

Eventually, in order to enforce their server rules, example.social admins will have no choice but to defederate from Libs of TikTok's instance.

Only, this ain't poa.st or chudbuds.lol with a few dozen neo-nazis. This is Threads with Libs of TikTok and my mom and Carl Beto, a random housepainter living in Detroit ... all mixed in together.

My prediction is that Threads will give us no choice. They will become another AP silo, like Lies Social and Gab, only unlike those cesspools, it won't be voluntary.

@feditips@mstdn.social @ocdtrekkie@mastodon.social Maybe just maybe you're missing something?

You talking about "Mastodon" as it it were a monolith, and "Facebook" as if it was a behemoth. Neither is true.

If you can't understand why you're being accused of fear-mongering, it's because you don't grok ActivityPub or the Fediverse. You're demanding the impossible and railing against us all for not adhering to some imagined dogma that only exists in pure form in your own mind.

Stop pretending to speak for everyone. Change your username. You should not be pretending to offer "Fedi Tips" to anyone.

    Hi new folks!

    * Follow generously. If you don't follow anyone, you won't have anything in your Home feed! That's fine if you're here to broadcast, but it might be hard to find followers if you don't follow.

    * Lead generously. If you don't let anyone follow you, you won't have any reach into networks outside your own. That's fine if you want a private experience, but remember: nothing is really private in the Fediverse. Even DMs are not really private.

    * Mute on a whim. You can silence users and threads with a click, either temporarily or permanently. You don't have to take any shit.

    * Block at will. Silencing the bigot not good enough? You can block individual users, or whole domains. Probably most of the worst of the worst are already defederated from your instance. But if not, you can do it yourself, for yourself.

    * #Mastodon is NOT the #Fediverse. You can migrate from Mastodon instance to Mastodon instance. Or, you can migrate from Mastodon to #Calckey. You can have a #Pixelfed user, and see and boost your pics in your Calckey timeline, or Mastodon timeline, or #Lemmy or #kbin or, or, ... Don't limit yourself to this one playground. YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL.

    @TonyStark@progressivecafe.social YYyyyyyyyyuuuuuuuuuuP!

My degree worked (math/CS) and I make too much to qualify.

Will I "on-ramp"? Hell yes! My income is right on the cusp, but *I don't begrudge anyone who qualifies*! One of my kids qualifies, and he's less in debt than I am.

Resuming my payments will hurt, but I can afford it, and it's my debt. I was paying it before the pandemic. I'll keep paying it ... probably for the rest of my life.

YyyyyuuuuuuuuP. Some Fedizens are believing Meta's illusion of power and infallibility...

    ...and wildly underestimating the Fediverse.

I agree this is a very unequal transaction: the Fediverse gets possibly millions of new users, including people like my mom and sister, who will never use the Fediverse, otherwise...

...and Meta gets what in return? To lose their walled garden as their formerly proprietary users slowly leak into the vast ocean of ad-free options.

It's a Win-Win for the Fediverse and Meta's users, but not necessarily for Meta, itself. Unless they can offer a UI that people prefer over Mastodon, Calckey, Lemmy, Friendica, etc etc

@tchambers@indieweb.social @atomicpoet@calckey.social It never worked, and eventually the diversity and accessibility of the web won out. And it sounds a *lot* like what Meta may be walking into. When you give people inside your walls a means of accessing the world beyond them, often times they leave and won’t come back.

@marcan@social.treehouse.systems If it's causing cognitive dissonance, we can argue about Emacs VS Vim!

    (Emacs, obviously.)
