I agree this is a very unequal transaction: the Fediverse gets possibly millions of new users, including people like my mom and sister, who will never use the Fediverse, otherwise...
...and Meta gets what in return? To lose their walled garden as their formerly proprietary users slowly leak into the vast ocean of ad-free options.
It's a Win-Win for the Fediverse and Meta's users, but not necessarily for Meta, itself. Unless they can offer a UI that people prefer over Mastodon, Calckey, Lemmy, Friendica, etc etc
@notroot I would expect them to offer a pretty good UI. The fact is we haven't been doing enough, but that's on us not on them. If they outcompete us on anything, that's just shining a light on problems we have to solve, not creating them.
