Help! The metaphor of "snowballing" -- starting with one paper and adding more papers to your "read this soon" pile, because they have citation relationships or they use the same dataset or they come from the same theme issue or they are by the same senior author's lab or whatever -- is there a similar metaphor that would work well in a tropical climate, where people have possibly never had the experience of rolling a snowball around until it's gigantic? #English#metaphor
Am I the only person who finds it weird whenever people use “anniversary” for everything?
* 100th Year Death Anniversary * 34th Anniversary of the Luzon Earthquake
While technically correct, the word “anniversary” gives us the message that something is worth ___celebrating___.
Why not use “remembrance”?
* 100th Year Remembrance Day * 34th Remembrance Day of the Luzon Earthquake
The added benefit of using “remembrance” is that it brings to attention that we should remember the fallen. Compare that when we use “anniversary”, the focus is on the death and the earthquake itself (using our examples above).
What do you think? What's your understanding or opinion about using “anniversary” for everything when there are better, more appropriate, words?
When I read "Pillars of the Earth," the added value for me was, apart from leaning about that important period in #English history and being entertained, was learning about a major new architectural feat, the #Gothic , with lots of new vocabulary.
European parliament #elections take place next weekend. I'm going to go through the parties and candidates list tonight. One of crucial qualification criteria, and do not laugh straight away please, is fluency in #english. Which limits my choice substantially, I'm afraid. 🇨🇿🇪🇺
What I'm saying is practice what you preach & advocate. #Scottish politicians for Scottish politics, & #English politicians for English politics.
HOWEVER, you've hit the nail on the head that for now we're all part of the #UK, so different rules apply. This brings us nicely full circle to why I'll vote #Labour at #GE2024 & why I think they're the best hope (in my humble opinion) for the WHOLE of the UK!
FINALLY! We got there in the end! Yaaaay!🌹❎️ 🗳 🏴 😁
Just put a search for #English devolution & you'll find a plethora of information on it. Having elected Mayor's with limited devolved powers was the start, but the #English regions want more.
We're all tired of being dictated to by Westminster. Your concern is with #Scotland, hence why I feel you may have missed the strength of feeling about devolution throughout the Midlands & the North in particular.
That's my whole point. It didn't matter if he represented a #Scottish or #English constituency. He was Scottish & his place of birth had little bearing on people voting #Labour.
It's the character & effectiveness of the person that matters most, albeit I concede it helps if the candidate also has a local connection too.
Being #Scottish it's probably gone unnoticed North of the border, but it's been a HUGE issue for nearly 40 years by many #English regions who feel left behind, & second to #London & the #Tories#Southern Shire Counties in their rural Stockbroker belt heartlands.
This has been the quest for my region since the riots of 1981. Like I said, it's not just #Scotland who feel left behind & ignored by Westminster.
I've no idea how this has come about, & it's a bit suspect that there's no direct quotes from #Labour about this.
I suppose it'd be preferable to have a locally born candidate standing, however it's quite commonplace in England that high profile MPs are parachuted into self seats.
Question: Should all #Scottish born MPs be banned from representing #English constituencies?
This theory by linguist Bernard Cerquiglini was put to the test today in the France24 newsroom when the title of a segment dedicated to the #Paris2024 Olympics was determined to be "Destination Paris" in both #English and #French... #linguistics#France
There are few #English sovereigns with such a dubious marital record as Henry VIII, who fancied a lot of women and was very jealous.
A lot of historic fiction portrays #AnneBoleyn as a lascivious #adulteress. Current scientific research does not support this hypothesis. She and her family, which rose "from rags to riches," most likely were a target of a court cabal by the infamous...
