A counter counter question. Are you suggesting only local people can understand & empathise with local issues? Isn't that why you elect Local Councillors?

Agreed. However I don't see why not being locally born should stop that MP from effectively representing his constituency. You're either a good representative or not.
@AnthonyFStevens @Wen @Theriac @soren I really don't understand how you jumped to "locally born". That's just a ridiculous suggestion and not remotely relevant to this discussion.
@AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren MPs are meant to represent their constituents as well.
@AnthonyFStevens @Wen @Theriac @soren Do you not think its a bit insulting to those local branches to choose a candidate from 800 miles away over one of them. Would that be usual?
@Wen @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren
Maybe on local history, but on local issues there are CLP's & Ward branches to fall back on for support.
MPs are there to represent local interests, not impose the interests of Chipping Norton on Dundee South. At the end of the day, it's a job, not a vocation.
@AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren
You need to know something about the constituency and the country first.
@Wen @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren
Use Google & speak to the locals about their issues & what matters most to them. It's quite straightforward to do. It's why you have a national network of CLP's & Ward branches. 🤷🏾♂️
@AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren 6 weeks of cramming coming up?
@Wen @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren
So are you saying a #Scottish MSP shouldn't be allowed to switch to an #English constituency?
Isn't this like saying a person shouldn't be allowed to move cities for a new job they're qualified to do? What's the difference? 🤔
@AnthonyFStevens @Wen @Theriac @soren Which English constituency do you imagine would be available to an MSP? They're members of the Scottish Parliament. There are no English constituencies.
@AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren No I have not. I have confirmed that I can understand how a Scottish based MSP can know his constituency and represent his constituents regardless of place of birth. For goodness sake, one of the Labour candidates was standing for an English constituency not very long ago!
@AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren
Anyway it is *not* about being locally born - as Holyrood has demonstrated. A former ’Scottish’ Labour leader, Richard Leonard was born in Yorkshire. I might disagree with his politics, even if he was to the left of the current HQ, but I never questioned his interest and knowledge of his constituency.
@Wen @Theriac @CloudyMrs @soren
You've answered your own query then...
@Wen @AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @soren and the constituency also need to know something about the candidate. You'd think so anyway.
