Am I the only person who finds it weird whenever people use “anniversary” for everything?
* 100th Year Death Anniversary
* 34th Anniversary of the Luzon Earthquake
While technically correct, the word “anniversary” gives us the message that something is worth ___celebrating___.
Why not use “remembrance”?
* 100th Year Remembrance Day
* 34th Remembrance Day of the Luzon Earthquake
The added benefit of using “remembrance” is that it brings to attention that we should remember the fallen. Compare that when we use “anniversary”, the focus is on the death and the earthquake itself (using our examples above).
What do you think? What's your understanding or opinion about using “anniversary” for everything when there are better, more appropriate, words?
