   So my nephew, who only lives an hour from me, decided to have his wedding out of the country and also didn't invite me. He now wants me and my wife to come to his "wedding reception" five months after the wedding. My opinion is "fuck him." Convince me otherwise.

     I like my family. I have no issues with my siblings or parents, and love all of them, and have done and still do work for all of them. That's how close and trusted I am with my family, and partially because I don't bullshit or politic. You really can't have a confidant who does either.
     
     But when it comes to this specific issue, my opinion is that weddings aren't just about the bride and groom. They're communal, as is the "reception," which is generally held immediately after a wedding, and is called a "reception" because it's the first time the couple is received by the "community" as a couple.
     
     When a couple leaves their home to get married somewhere else, and either doesn't invite others or makes the travel itself an obstacle, that sends the message that they don't care, and comes across as selfish — we have to have the wedding in Country X because it's about us, not the uninvited family.
     
     Further, holding a party later and calling it a "reception" does not make it a reception whatsoever.
     
     I got married in my parents backyard, and my reception was held there. My siblings weddings were very similarly held. So this whole situation just pissed me off tbh. Not gonna lie about it.

Did he elope and do a ceremony (legal or otherwise) or did he have a legit wedding out of the country, and now he is doing something more local and decided to ask you to come? because if it's the second, yeah fuck him.

     i invited all my immediate relatives. we were just trying to weed out the people who didn't want to travel that we don't really know so it's easier to go somewhere else. it is a bit messed up he didn't invite you, so if he invited other relatives but not you, that would piss me off and i probably would skip this thing.

     I *could* imagine the bride being stressed about planning a big wedding abroad and then a big to-do locally after--and so waiting to set in stone the local event only once the abroad wedding is done.
     Though that is inconsiderate/dismissive of everyone's time/relationship.
     
     However--from the other comments you've answered--the event abroad was a *small* group. Seemingly relaxed.
     I don't see a reason of they're having waited due to stress.
     
     I wonder the reasoning for the smaller wedding. One abroad can be expensive. Do you know whether it was their decision or the decision of whoever offered/paid for it (if not them) ?

     I don't know much about the financing, but I think it was one of those all inclusive deals. Nonetheless, there's a simple solution.... don't have your wedding abroad. There's no need, and it does rub people the wrong way, which is foreseeable.

     I wouldn’t feel like it was anything personal, he probably promised his wife a marriage ceremony in a specific place and knew it wouldn’t be feasible to fly everyone out. I don’t like big weddings, tbh. People get so caught up in the theatricality of it that they forget what it means. It isn’t the happy ending of a movie, it’s the beginning of a difficult journey. Just like Fatherhood isn’t the beginning of your story, but the ending and epilogue.

     I'm married and have been with my wife for over 20 years. We get along and spend nearly ever minute in proximity to each other, and even shower together. But we're a rare couple. When I see most other couples, the divorce rate is not surprising.

He said that anyone could come to the overseas one, but knowing the extreme cost he knew there would be few takers and (this is important too) let everyone know not to feel pressured because they were going to have a domestic reception too.

     I didn't know about the reception until after the wedding. I suspect he caught wind about various family members that were not happy and is trying to back peddle.

     My wife and I got married in my parents backyard. A retired judge I knew performed the ceremony, and a restauranter client that was into me for a bit catered and hosted the bar. I looked like a fucking Rockstar though, and my wife looked like a Rockstar's bride.

     I was invited to a wedding in Brooklyn, on a Friday, in the summer, at Prospect Park. I had to bring my brother and 2 disabled people. It took me an hour just to get from the hotel to the park.

     My cousin spent the whole time with her friends or taking selfies, never even came over to talk with us. Indeed, one of the bridesmaids told a story about visiting with my family that actually offended me. This trip cost me a couple grand to attend.

     I don't really trust people who consider the "wedding" and "reception" two distinct events with no relation. The wedding itself should surround the bride and groom with all of the important people in their life. Not their parents and the Filipino resort staff.

     I have a quasi-close friend who does it. She's as nutty as they are. Basically admits she doesn't for the money, and that her client's fucked up lives are their problem.
     
     I honestly don't think that way. My clients are real people with real needs. I like getting paid, but it's not why I do it. People need help, people want to be relieved of their problems, they want guidance and some sense of surety. Sometimes, I think that my job is much like being the oarsman on the river Stix. I guide people across unknown waters.

     By way of example, I was the best men for a friend of mine. The agreement was that he would get me a room in the city (because driving there is a pain due to traffic). At the last minute, he told me he decided to not comp the room, but he still wanted me there at 8am. Apparently, this was the fiancee's decision (she hates me btw, so it was too fuck me). I told him I'd get there when I get there and took my sweet time. I don't put up with bullshit.
