So...Kaiser Permanente won't have the COVID boosters until November, but they won't cover for their patients to get it outside their system even though they won't provide it? Like, why would you want to actively increase your patients' chances of getting COVID and having serious side effects? It doesn't even make business sense given that treating COVID patients is more expensive 😖
@siege oof, yeah, makes sense. Honestly, kinda fucked up that universities and schools wouldn't accommodate you, and makes me want to rant on your behalf. And definitely can imagine you wish things were otherwise, apologies if I implied minimizing how much the autoimmune stuff sucks, because yeah, it does so much.
Wish you could have the chance to get something semi normal some day. At least, appreciate you sharing yourself and your life with us all and letting us share ours with you 💜
@siege I can say, I have had exactly zero girlfriends whose father's could easily have me killed. I can't tell if that means I've made smarter choices or if it means I've played it too safe in life or truly *live* 😅
@siege CJ, just gonna say it, your life is truly weird and brilliant and absurd. But also weirdly makes sense for you to have a casually ridiculous life for some reason.
@siege yeah, during my wife's work with ILGA World, I've gotten to know quite a few people for whom that's a big chunk of their activist work. It's important, but I'm not sure I would ever had the patience for it.
I will say, the progress Japanese LGBTQ activists have made using that strategy has been really effective there and it is the kind of place that the need for education is a bigger factor than active politicization against our existence. I wish we had more of that before the politicization of our existence took off in the Anglosphere. I hope that your friend is making progress though and helping get people who can be powerful allies onto our side before it's too late
@abolisyonista I'm glad somebody else said this because it bugged me too...I was like, okay, supposed to be silly, over the top movie, so don't take it too seriously....but...but...ah shoot, now I'm going to be thinking all night about how the Barbies must have genocides the indigenous inhabitants of Barbieland....wait, is that why there's only one Allan?! Did they genocide the Allans?!?!
@siege@ttpphd@tattie yeah, I like that a lot better. Makes a lot of sense! I still identify as a nonbinary trans woman for a lot of reasons, but I could see "endogender" being something that wouldn't reinforce or reimpose the gender binary stuff on our community.
@siege@tattie I know this is snarky, but this does make me want to then identify as "not not non-binary" 😅
I actually chew on this too, CJ, cause being trans is by nature being in violation of the gender binary. There's a video essay by Lily Alexandre that actually gets at some thoughts I share on this: https://youtu.be/eAXFn22q8Ac?si=s70XuIOpvOFc_C6c
Would be curious either CJ's or Tattie's thoughts because this is an area of queer language I'm still reflecting on.
@guide You left out the part that hits me hardest these days, the last line: "Which can be uncomfortable, if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."
I actually have this quote with the last part on my wall because a lot of us are living as one of those facts that such people thinks needs altering. And like the doctor, we'll need to get creative and a little bit odd to survive. 💖
@Terra You could get horn implants, some folks do. I think they're pretty easy and not too much trouble...but not something you will want to just do and undo day-to-day. 😅
@Terra I actually used to think about this when I would create a feminine character with the express purpose of hopelessly wishing by some magic I would wake up as them some day....I think having horns like those would make it hard to get comfy to sleep! Or like, the ram horns that curl back? I love the way those look, but I'm a side-sleeper and this seems like trouble.
Also, I already have enough trouble putting on a sports bra. It would definitely get caught on my horns with one of my hands dangling through the armhole...it would be pretty ridiculous 😅😈
@emmalilian@faithisleaping@NicolaElle@rooster This was definitely where I was, @siege - I knew I needed to get out of the house that was already almost burnt down before I went with it. And while I only identified as non-binary and genderfluid early on, I knew where my euphoria pointed, I just didn't really feel like I *was* a woman yet until I started living as one. Once I had been transitioning openly in my life, I finally found that sense of ownership in being a woman and felt myself as *being* a woman every day.
I also wonder, given what you mentioned about HRT, how much of it is still wrapped around our internalized belief that gender is this naturalized thing in the body? The idea that if we just change the biology we can transition, when transitioning is actually a day-to-day labor of growth and living in the world.
If you're a US citizen, please contact your senators and representatives about this, ESPECIALLY if they are democrats. Ask them to not support these bills with these anti-trans amendments attached.
I didn't realize the latest version of these has also attempted to ban all federal funding to any hospital that provides gender-affirming care (esp. puberty blockers / HRT), meaning hospitals and HMOs would probably be bullied into dropping almost all gender-affirming care across the entire US.
If these are approved, the world for trans USians will become very narrow and many of us will not be able to live as trans people anymore.
One reason I wish we had universal healthcare and universal housing in the US, beyond wanting basic dignity and care for everyone, is that it traps people in toxic and abusive relationships.
Here in Southern California, multiple members of my found family and queer friend network have been caught with toxic or abusive partners in their living situation. Because monthly rent on a one bedroom is basically as high as the median income around here (eat your landlord), trying to leave or asking your partner to leave is effectively making someone homeless or forced to move into another toxic situation. And we don't want to make other trans folks homeless even if they hurt us.
This means that people don't feel like they can take this step until it gets so dangerous someone is likely to end up dead or at least deeply traumatized. Universal housing and healthcare are domestic violence issues are feminist issues are LGBTQ issues.
I have suddenly been forced to use it for work and it feels deeply hostile to what helps my ADHD brain function. It also adds extra steps to accessing a bunch of basic functions and does not give you the option to just go back to a Windows 10 style interface.
Like, this doesn't feel like just another "this is unfamiliar and I'm cranky about it" version. This feels like one of versions where there will once more be a consensus it was horrible
@JessTheUnstill@roadriverrail true enough, doesn't need to be banned per se. Heck, wouldn't want them criminalizing concerts because sometimes people get hurt in the mosh pit.
But yeah, was just thinking with the original post, it would probably be good to at least get football out of public schools and maybe put better regulations on leagues to be responsible. And unlike being trans, kids are actually pressured by peers and adults to join and endanger themselves in it. 😓
@JessTheUnstill ...well, except that actually kinda sounds like a good idea? Like, given what we know about TBI, it actually might be good to restrict American Football. I suspect it harms young people at way higher rates than any form of gender-affirming care
@VPS_Reports As a trans girl from Nebraska, I can say most folks really don't care or notice I'm trans (though I do have passing privilege and avoid making myself as visibly queer). And a lot of people didn't realize how extreme the stuff being proposed is and voice a willingness to act to stop it when I explain there. There is a lot more diversity of views in red states than people realize and we need to leverage those opportunities to build safety and equity for our people
