Having seen what a huge proportion of new users create an account and then just never seem to do anything with it, I really believe Mastodon needs something like starter packs, and maybe even a little automated thing that offers a few upon signup (this part could be managed by instance admins, rather than universally). Follow lists are ok but the mechanism for importing them needs to be simplified a lot, like "click this button" simple.

The one big thing I would change is that people should have to grant permission before being included in someone's recommendations.

"Free fares increase ridership, and more riders mean more spending. More riders plus streetcar outcomes noted earlier are associated with $2.3 million more tax revenue in 2023 than in 2019, adjusted for inflation. This excludes all other revenues, which are substantial.

The bottom line is that the $800,000 in waived streetcar fares is associated with $2.3 million in new tax revenue since 2019 for a net gain of $1.5 million.

Put differently, each $1.00 of waived fares is associated with $2.88 in new tax revenue."

I have read that if the car is in deep water, it's more less impossible to open a door due to the immense pressure, and that breaking a window is your only viable option.

Gold is a real thing that exists and is useful, regardless of how much value is assigned to it. Bitcoin, on the other hand, has no existence outside of its valuation.

I will ride on the sidewalk in some places, regardless of legality, where the car traffic is just too hazardous. But I try to go at pedestrian speeds and carefully yield to people walking.

Is there any reason a signature can't be printed? That's still individualistic enough to be distinct for each person.

Things like gutting most of the regulatory agencies, even the weather service, will happen though, and that will injure everyone. It would not surprise me to see the economy collapse within a few years.

The second bike is not a true folder, it's more like a hybrid of a folder and a mini-velo. This is an older Pacific Reach. It rides pretty much like a normal bike (at least so far as I remember what a normal bike feels like). There's front and rear suspension and a built-in rear rack.

You can pack this bike inside a suitcase by removing the front wheel and swinging the rear triangle under so that the rear wheel rests inside the fork. But it's not practical to fold it and carry it around like most folding bikes.

I'd love a new version of this. They've upgraded it with disc brakes and some other nice things, but I think you now have to import them from Asia and it's absurdly expensive.

Do you expect they would answer your calls?

Hmmm...I wouldn't put it past them to implement this without any way for the recipient to turn the notifications off. Just think of the interesting things one could do with that.

I figure a mixed bag is the best we can hope for from any politician above a local level. I'm content if half of their policy decisions are agreeable.

It's not really necessary for each agency or government entity to run its own server. There could be a shared service that specialized in doing that for them. Government things do have an additional layer of requirements that private ones don't have, though. Maybe that makes it less simple.

I could be wrong about this, but I think Mastodon just masks the identity of the individual who made the report in those cases.

This has been the bane of my existence since I was a little kid. I use what I consider a perfectly normal word, and get called a "walking dictionary."

Bigger vocabulary and better grammar than most Americans is a pretty low bar.

It works the same as "you," which at one time was a plural pronoun, not a singular one. (The singular form was "thou.") In formal English, both "you" and "they" use the verb forms that go with plurals even when they're referring to one individual. It's not really consistent, but what in English ever is? So, like this:

    You are wonderful.
    They are wonderful.

You were sitting in this chair.
They were sitting in this chair.

A child-bearing wife wouldn't really be safe there either. If a pregnancy requires any medical intervention, they may not be able to get it, especially if it's a condition for which standard of care involves terminating the pregnancy. Having children is risky when you don't have access to proper health care.

I kinda feel like this isn't a valid question. Whether I'm a good friend seems like it's purely subjective, and depends entirely on my friend's perception of me. How I think people perceive me probably differs vastly from how they really do.
