    Periodic reminder on Tesla safety:
If you can read this, I am stronger than you. There are ~150 people on earth stronger than me, and you are not one of them. I am not strong enough to break a Tesla window from the inside of the car. So you definitely are not.

If you are in a Tesla, and the car catches fire or falls in water, and you don't know how to manually open the door, you are going to burn to death or drown.

Do you know how to manually open a Tesla door?

No, a glass punch tool will not help you.

I am strong enough to break regular glass with my bare hands. I can and have done this. I am strong enough to break tempered car window glass with my bare hands. I can and have done this. I can't break laminated glass with my bare hands. I can't do it with a crow bar. Not quickly enough anyway. Neither can you.

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2HxWn6eP74

The only way out is to know how to open the door via the manual release. Again, do you know where the release is?

You all know that the word "full" in "Full self driving" is taking a lot of creative license.

You all know how hot a lithium fire burns.

You will know that electric doors can fail in crashes or floods.

So don't act surprised when you see that report that Teslas have the most fatal crashes per mile of any car brand.

I still ask every parent that drives their kids around in a Tesla if they know how to open the door manually. I have only once met a parent that did know. (Shout-out YB Chu!)

@mekkaokereke {fatalities / mile} feels like "if you make a thing that moves or operate a service that moves", you MUST report this number every time you report earnings, taxes, or file misc forms for regulatory or statutory compliance.

And if we lived in the future we were promised in the 2000s, every time the company is mentioned, the text would include this number... "Acme [0.76 f/m] announced today..."

I was not aware of this. That's scary. And that's yet another reason not to buy a Tesla.

Of course, future humans (if they exist) can take comfort in the fact that when a sufficiently high profile death does occur, a new law will mandate visible manual door releases, à la Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.

@zakatak @mekkaokereke On a Model 3/Y, the -> FRONT <- doors have a very easy to access release. So easy to use that it's frequently found by accident by people looking for the door release.

The rear doors don't have any.

I have a model 3, but I don't have any kids and don't use the rear. I can't imagine gaming out how to get kids out of there if the car went into the water.

Yes, many have laminated glass. But not many combine the laminated glass with electric doors that often stop working in a crash.

If you are in a crash in your Subaru, the laminated glass can be safer than tempered glass. But then when everything stops, you can hopefully just pull the door handle and open the door normally.

The Tesla equivalent to the Subaru's normal door handle, is the cable hidden behind the speaker grill.

Yes, I know about ceramic tools and window breaking and stealing from cars. I along with every Black person in the Bay area, are experts on the crime. Because SF is the world's leading city for car window break-in theft. Seriously! Number one on planet earth!🏆🥇

And cops can't stop it, because of racism.🙃🙂

Because the crime is often done by the SF Asian community. But white people are convinced that Black people do most of the crime. So they tell cops to hurt Black folk more.🤡

It's November. I can literally tell you the exact 4 block area in the US that will have the most car break-ins in December. And I know I'll be right! 🔮🧙🏿♂️

And the break-ins don't happen where *Black people live*. They happen where *white tourists go*.

Cybertruck failed in the real marketplace, but I suspect they're about to succeed in the fake marketplace. The people crowing about government waste are probably about to sell a whole bunch of these expensive fail wagons to the DOD, so that military personnel in combat zones can use a vehicle with less capability than an affordable hatchback bought by a be-flanneled Portland barista just trying to get from A to B.

@bryanredeagle yes, once there's enough water in the car.

      Zero physics explanation:

Picture a large fish tank, 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft. When it's empty, you can lift it. But when it's full of water, you can't lift it, because it's too heavy.

A cubic foot of water weighs ~62 lbs. So the full tank now weighs 1,682 lbs! (The weight of the glass can pretty much be ignored)

But if the room the fish tank is in gets flooded so that the tank is underwater, you can now lift it easily! The water helps you!

If you are strong enough to lift a 1600 lb fish tank, then you are strong enough to open a car door in water. I am not strong enough to open a car door in water.

If you are strong enough to open an empty fish tank, then you are strong enough to open a car door in water once some water is in the car. I am strong enough to open a car door in water once there is some water in the car.

Haven't regretted it at all - the only way it could be improved is to have been fitted with manual window winders as well as electric ones.

As for its carrying capacity... it's amazing what a furniture salesman can do if told that they'll sell a big dining table if they can get it into the back of a car...

And even people who know that they are there can not often find the mechanical opener levers.

But if you are in the back seat you can kiss the world goodbye because there are no mechanical door opener levers, only the electronic buttons. (Oh yeah, there is a rear door release if you have a pry bar to open up one of the door panels.)

@mekkaokereke that's crazy! I'm pretty sure (I don't know the name of the regulation, so I didn't double check), that in the EU laminated glass is mandatory for the windscreen and tempered glass for all side windows.

So for the EU versions of their cars (not the Cybertruck, which won't get an EU admission for a multitude of reasons anyway) they would have to do this differently anyway.

@mekkaokereke I just checked ECE R43 (that's the EU regulation concerning the approval of safety glazing materials and their installation on vehicles) and laminated glass seems to be legal for side windows.

But most car manufactures don't think throwing metal balls at their cars is a good sales pitch and just don't use it.

@mekkaokereke Holy shit. I've never been in a Tesla, so TIL that they don't just have door handles.

Truly, we are building the stupidest dystopia.

@mekkaokereke I'm reading your very complete response again, after someone else answered to it. And I'm wondering if it was obvious that my message was just a little joke.

I had no idea of who are the other strength athlete you mentionned and I was not implying anything about them. I just find "If you can read this" a little funny because of the litteral meaning it has in addition to the actual meaning.

If it was not clear, it's on me (who can't write clearly apparently 😅).

In China a common accessory is this strap that is high visibility for you to manually pull open a Tesla rear door. For the life of me I don’t know why someone hasn’t bought a container full of these to sell on Amazon.

      @mekkaokereke thank you for this.

I can actually easily punch through several wooden boards or bricks, or even go through them hitting them with the side of my hand (done it last time in October, as my current city organized a demonstration of various sports to promote physical activity, and I participated with my martial arts club). In fact, very many years ago, when I was still a teenager, I had to punch through a car window from the outside, to save the driver who had just lost control and crashed on a lamppost (the doors were jammed and the car was leaking petrol all around).

But I didn't know about laminated glass. I just read about it, and FWIW I think you are absolutely right about it being really difficult to punch through. So, thanks for the info (also fuck Musk and his company, but that goes without saying)!
