I went to my third #teslatakedown protest on Saturday, this time in the wealthy Seattle suburb of Bellevue. Great to see another strong turnout of an estimated 350 people and a largely very positive response from passersby. Incidentally, later that day I also traded in my model 3 for a Subaru Crosstrek. The national (int’l) momentum of this effort is a small bright spot in the fight back. I think there’s a chance it could impact tesla’s sales and stock price in significant way. But… 1/2
I worry that Elon is looking at other ways of securing his extreme wealth and power. Of course being Trump’s right hand man helps. Seems like obvious options are directing gov’t to fund and otherwise prop up Spacex and starlink, but no doubt other grifts are possible too. He may let Tesla fail if those other options bear fruit. Not that we shouldn’t try to weaken him thru this boycott protest.
@simonbp but what if he gets massive government contracts? For sure, it seems like hitting tesla can have some significant impact. Seems like the sooner the better. And lots of other efforts still needed in numerous areas to stop this regime.
@iftas For me, @pluralistic said it well at https://pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/ulysses-pact/. I can't totally rule out getting a BS account, but there's enough of a critical mass for me on Mastodon and the #fediverse seems like a better path long term for avoiding enshittification. I'd like to see more communities join tho, but this is also contingent on it becoming more welcoming and safe for them.
@mekkaokereke@ColinTheMathmo@rakhichawla can you say more? Like how do you increase someone else’s enjoyment in a way that they want to keep coming back? (This seems like what the original post is calling engagement tho it’s somewhat vague on the how)
@bicmay@ProPublica perhaps patients should be more aggressive in doing this and make the process more costly for insurers? Or do you think they would retaliate?
@bicmay@ProPublica No doubt. I suspect making patients more overwhelmed is part of the strategy.
I just had a small example where a provider's online bill pay site doesn't update immediately after making a payment; it takes a few days for manual processing. And, so if you go to the site again, it gives no indication of the payment and lets you pay again.
@sj@tk@biketooter@cycling@mastobikes to be fair, it’s quite possible for a steel framed bike to be quite light without going to extremes. But it will be a thin walled steel that dents and crumples pretty easily as I can attest.
@mekkaokereke these successes seem so rare and most police departments seem to aggressively oppose such reforms/approaches. It’s made me much more sympathetic to an abolitionist position or at least defunding and more drastic accountability and shifting responsibilities to non-police groups. Really need to get gov leaders to step away from this adversarial and racist tough on crime approach that dumps money into rogue PDs while starving rest of city
@AnarchoNinaWrites apologies for the royal "we". I want the left to win and gain power. Stomping fascists by gaining power - at fascist's expense - and putting in place systems that prevent people from becoming fascists and sway some who are or have sympathies (and disempowering the rest) is what I have in mind.
@AnarchoNinaWrites Seems like we do want to win over many who vote for fascists or fascist enablers. That doesn't negate your point about not trying to win arguments with fascists.
@kingrat I suspect the only real way to “control” weight are systemic, like via walkable communities and people being well supported generally. This is really more about supporting general health but it will tend to bring weight down on average.
@aud I have a friend pushing the idea of splitting the country in two because of the irreconcilable differences. Besides being politically and logistically impossible, we can't, as you say, write off red states. There will always be large populations in them who will bear the brunt. I don't blame these people for moving or wanting to move out of these places, but they can't all leave (nor should they have to). Moreover, fascists will invent new scapegoats.
@mekkaokereke@rasmus91 what I love so much is how integral the drumming is to the song. So many drumming videos are just drumming gymnastics. Yes, Jonathan’s drumming is technically incredible but it also fits the song perfectly. Testament to him and also Quincy I’m sure had some influence
