    @icedquinn @Suiseiseki @lispi314 SSDs aren't harder to encrypt. rather if you ever wrote unencrypted data to one and assuming you don't trust the firmware's secure erase functionality then the only way to reliably sanitize it is to physically destroy it

    it's an after-you-already-fucked-up sanitization issue not an encryption issue

    @Humpleupagus government use of captchas (and analytics) hosted by third parties never sat well with me. these are government services, there's no other game in town and in many cases I am more or less forced to make use of them

    they also "protect" the weirdest things against "bots" I mean if it were just the final submission page for various forms I would at least understand the motivation but often it's random informational pages or even worse something that's ALREADY BEHIND A LOGIN WTF

    although in this case I suspect the entire thing stems from that one guy who scraped more or less all the available cases in the entire US and then (iirc) made them freely available and indexed things like names. but public is public so he did nothing wrong as far as I'm concerned

    @NeonPurpleStar no, in the sense that the system will continue functioning. maybe, in the sense that you might or might not need to in order to be running the updated code (and you might or might not care about that)

    best practice would be to reboot if it's reasonably easy to do so

    @LukeAlmighty @beardalaxy it's not (necessarily) that manipulative is negative (I do nearly always see it that way tho) but rather that it ascribes a particular intent regarding behavior towards the other party

    my point is that even in the event that you specifically decide NOT to attempt to manipulate the other party, refraining from a common social practice will generally leave you at a disadvantage. so I figure it's perfectly reasonable to imitate others with the intent to fit in so to speak

    similarly, are perfume and cologne manipulative? or even just antiperspirant for that matter. humans don't naturally smell that way. I think it comes down to context and intent

    fakery certainly but I dunno if an aspect of personal grooming can be considered *purely* manipulative. it can certainly be used that way but at the same time if most of the people around you are doing it then you will be at a disadvantage if you don't regardless of your wishes
