@sundogplanets Lilith's Brood by Octavia Butler.
The Oankali are a fascinating alien species, and I don't think I've ever read one like it before or since.

"Daddy, I'm 5 and a half years old!"
"Yes you are! How old do you think daddy is?"
"Uhm... four."
"Four years old?"
"Yesh!"
"So I'm younger than you?!"
"No, daddy, you're four ADULT years old."
"Ah yes, silly me."
Honestly, she's got a point. Adult years hit different from kid years.
@mastodonmigration What's even better, YOU DON'T NEED TO CREATE A PIXELFED ACCOUNT TO INTERACT WITH PIXELFED!
You can follow anyone on Pixelfed right here from Mastodon; for example, there's nothing stopping you from following e.g. @dansup right from however you access Mastodon.
That's the beauty of a shared protocol.
@skinnylatte As someone who's got a pretty wide first-hand cultural perspective, why do you think typical American food is so... [gestures broadly at the endless parade of monstrosities to be found on dinner tables across the nation] relative to other regional cuisines?
@skinnylatte I came to the US on an H1-B. I never felt like an "indentured servant," and quite frankly that kind of language is framing the debate in a peculiarly sinister way.
@hrefna I'm not plugged into Bluesky, but I'm curious what you're seeing though.
"See, he calls himself a free speech absolutist but then he censors his critics on his platform, and this proves that he's not for free speech at all!"
OF COURSE HE'S NOT! HE NEVER WAS! YOU ABSOLUTE NUMPTY!
I continue to be frustrated by people taking conservatives at their word. How naïve are those folks. Conservatives lie. Like, exitus acta probat is their whole fucking ideology. It's NEVER about what they say it is, and there's always a simpler motive based on greed and bigotry.
@skinnylatte I wonder if that's part of why you're such a great photographer. You understand how fleeting moments are, better than those of us who can recall different senses.
@kaia I like the concept, but I'd probably texture the point where you pour in the wax with ridges so that the seal kind of "grips" the shell and doesn't just slide off when you pull the two halves apart. Also needs to be placed in such a way that the wax doesn't seep through the crack between the halves and ruins the USB plug.
This is a fun design challenge!
@GottaLaff Anytime I hear something like "company reverses course after outcry," I always wonder which outcry specifically managed to make these Grinches hearts grow three times, allegedly. Was it the media coverage? Was it the grousing on social media? The letters from the subject matter expert organizations?
Because whatever works, we should do more of.
@skinnylatte Oh heck yeah, Flammekuche! Had that a lot when I was a kid. Especially loved the kind that had caramelized onions on it, Zwiebelwaie.

In short, anyone who advocates for a national crypto stockpile but not a national sweet potato pie stockpile is outside of their gosh darn mind.
In a move that tech insiders are calling long overdue, users are finally waking up and fleeing the Torment Nexus.
Surprisingly, the overwhelming majority of the exiled Torment Nexus users is migrating to the Agony Vortex, which recently concluded its beta and is now open to the public.
While California was feeling smug about ourselves for voting for Harris, we also rejected a ballot initiative that would have prevented prison slave labor.
@mekkaokereke Yeah, that one is just wild. Like, the wording was so amazingly clear: Vote yes if you want to abolish slavery. And like 53% of people were like, "Nah, let's keep slavery around."
We are nowhere near as enlightened as so many people like to pretend we are.
I wonder if this question on a US naturalization form is gonna get updated after January 20.
Today's gonna be one of those days that require a lot of serenity, courage, and wisdom to get through. To all my fellows in recovery, if you're struggling with the pressure and stress, take a moment to reconnect with your higher power. Make some outreach calls to the people on your phone list. Go to a meeting if you're able.
We have a lot of bad coping mechanisms for this shit, but now's the time to put the tools of recovery into practice.
It works if you work it.
@adhdeanasl @Mrfunkedude That's ballot harvesting. It's not technically illegal, but with everything that's going on? Yeah, best to drop off your ballot yourself.
There's fuckery about.
Happy birthday to you
