I forgot that Victoria Day and Memorial Day are on different weekends this year (sometimes they're the same) so I volunteered for an American Astronomical Society thing today, on a holiday in Canada. Whoops. At least I only have to talk for like 2 minutes and just be ready to answer questions at the end. After that overview of light pollution and satellite pollution advocacy work is done, it's back to goats and kid birthday party prep.

"I don't know how to."

"Oh, come on."

Up to the stage we went. Then she escorted me back.

"You're right. You don't."

Allow me to also take off my cowboy hat.

Might we... Is it too much to ask that we stop electing rich members of their high school or college debate teams to political offices? It's getting old.

#Qatar’s plane has a luxurious interior, but considerable work would be needed to prep the plane to serve as #AirForceOne —including ridding the jet of any hidden electronic listening devices & adding advanced communications equipment & specialized systems to protect the plane from a missile attack or other threats. And even if the plane is donated, the cost of those retrofits would be enormous, acc/to current & fmr #Pentagon ofcls: at least $1 billion.

After #Trump looked at the plane, one thing
was clear: It was love at first sight.

Flying back to Washington on one of the existing #AirForceOne 747s,
he marveled at what he had seen of the interiors of #Qatar’s jet and talked about the plane as if getting it for his own use was a done deal. A new paint job, his allies figured, & few other quick upgrades, & it could be ready within the year for Trump.

…The Boeing jets that the US had ALREADY PAID FOR became a secondary focus…

HOA meeting. Had to raise dues.

This place was originally intended as a retirement community for teachers. We still have some original owners. Every board over the years has tried to keep dues low. This has failed to impress the cost of living, halted the retirement and death of contractors charging below-market rates, or avoided tariffs.

Faced with paying for some things early, some unexpected expense (the insurer decided we needed to replace swaths of the sidewalk now, please), and the new mantra of "it's gonna cost you more 'cause of tariffs," our disappearing savings said we had no choice but to opt for a fairly hefty $50/month increase.

We probably should have opted for $60/month, but chose $50 and to see what maintenance can be moved forward. Roofs, probably. The shingles are guaranteed for longer than we're cycling.

Nobody likes spending money because some politician decided to charge us, and then pretend someone else pays. Please vote better. It won't solve all of our problems, but neither will expenses invented by fools.

What he's saying is that the big bang was when a space alien kid turned on his TV to watch The Stupid Show, and we're all here to amuse the child until its parental units determine it is bedtime, at which point the great disintegration occurs.

The past. It was... different.

I was a kid. We were going to have a barbecued dinner. My grandmother was there. I think it was while the coals were getting their act together that I was allowed to go play at a friend's place for a while.

Now, I was the sort of kid who liked singing his favorite songs, probably too loudly, but didn't we all? And so I did that day, happily, as I walked down the driveway and out of sight.

When I got back, my grandmother was livid.
"STEPHEN! Was that YOU I heard CURSING at the TOP OF YOUR LUNGS?"

What were the curses that infuriated my grandmother so?

"I'm just a soul whose intentions are good,
Oh, lord,
Please don't let me be misunderstood."

The Animals got me in trouble.

When Republicans say they want to go back to the good old days, they mean further back than that.

Stop them.
