@J12t @tchambers Before google embraced #Enshittification they were the likable search folks, then the free email folks, then the video folks (youtube), then the free browser folks. People just don't pay attention to how much they get used and abused by Google, Facebook, etc.

I can understand people using Chrome more than I can understand people happily tweeting on a platform actively promoting Nazi propaganda. I guess it's all about familiarity and laziness.

@jimcarroll Perhaps Silicon Valley’s saying should be “move fast and make money“ - The breaking things may just be a byproduct of them trying to distract the investing public from the mostly useless crap they peddle under the guise of future promises of tremendous awesomeness. #WeWork (or example) should be a case study in how Silicon Valley is nothing but greedy carnival barkers trying to distract from their own stench with a catchy phrase: move fast and break things.

@textfiles Some days I think you have the coolest job … some days I think you have the worst job … and some days (like today) I think both things at different times. Thanks for all you (and all the other worker bees) do to keep so much history from being lost to the dustbin.

The other day I stepped into my personal wayback machine and listened to some of that Kresge (K-Mart) background music.

@jimcarroll Nice setup. The cool thing is you have the infrastructure and expertise to live switch OBS (or similar) to whatever feed that is currently showing action - the youtube nature webcams folks would love that.

Adding a few bird feeders would make the daytime more active plus leave food droppings for critters (squirrels, raccoons, possums, etc.). Likely you don’t want to encourage any of this wildlife to come around, just observing you’re close if you want to nature stream.

@jimcarroll Unfortunately I have some experience with 24/7 streaming of remote cams….

Was part of your problem also reliable power and your cat-6 with PoE was a twofer solution?

Otherwise I would have thought directional antennas would have been easier and more flexible … unless you have a whole boatload of cameras, in which case I’m looking forward to watching the live feed on youtube … confession: I love the Deer Food Pantry.

@thomasfuchs And there was a time when FB didn’t have ads either … as they burned through billions in VC money to gain eyeballs.

A really screwed up business model that distorts the perception of value for the user.

@nova Perhaps controversial, but Postgres for everything that is not trivial, may need to scale, has appropriate resource availability, and has support resources / experience. For simple DB needs for novice users (like quick data analysis projects for Excel heads) SQLite “just works”.

@nova A profit driven corporation can (and should) be started if it can pay a living wage to the employees, treat the employees with respect and decency, sell a product that customers perceive as a good value (cost vs features), not degrade or exploit the natural environment, and have enough money to continue operating as a going concern for at least 3 to 5 years.

If all 5 items are satisfied, then such a company is a refuge or oasis for employees when compared to most other options available.

@nova corporations come in various flavors and sizes

large public corporations: pretend to operate "for the benefit of shareholders" but really operate "for the benefit of the senior executives" - rarely (like never) operate for the benefit of the public

small private corporations: more of a mixed bag; executives are more accountable to owners, but again rarely consider public benefit in decisions

    benefit corporation: ? ?

      Benefit corporation
In the United States, a benefit corporation (or in several jurisdictions including Delaware, a public-benefit corporation or PBC) is a type of for-profit corporate entity, authorized by 35 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, that includes positive impact on society, workers, the community and the environment in addition to profit as its legally defined goals, in that the definition of "best interest of the corporation" is specified to include those impacts. Laws concerning conventional corporations (referred to as "C corporations" by the IRS) typically do not specify the definition of "best interest of the corporation", which has led to the interpretation that increasing shareholder value (profits and/or share price) is the only overarching or compelling interest of a corporation. Benefit corporations may not differ much from traditional C corporations. A C corporation may change to a B corporation merely by stating in its approved corporate bylaws that it is a benefit corporation; however in certain jurisdictions (especially Delaware), the terms "public benefit corporation" or "PBC" are also required to be in the legal...

@nova when I think of sustainability in ecosystems it means (as many have said) that it can continue indefinitely. This implies a life cycle where death and birth of many things (people, animals, plants) are ongoing - the key is that the underlying environment is not incrementally degraded or poisoned over time, because then it would not be indefinitely sustainable.
