didierhoarau@hachyderm.io's status on Monday, 05-Dec-2022 22:15:30 JST didierhoarau @nova I agree with most things said here... 1 thing to add is that we talk too often about better kind of energy sources (renewable and other)... But we should be talking about using less energy...

E.g solar power is sustainable.
The answer seems so obvious to me, that I'm sure the question comes from pondering some big thoughts.

Alan Martello (amart@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Dec-2022 01:10:15 JST Alan Martello @nova when I think of sustainability in ecosystems it means (as many have said) that it can continue indefinitely. This implies a life cycle where death and birth of many things (people, animals, plants) are ongoing - the key is that the underlying environment is not incrementally degraded or poisoned over time, because then it would not be indefinitely sustainable.

Enginerdist (enginerdist@hachyderm.io)'s status on Tuesday, 06-Dec-2022 03:04:57 JST Enginerdist @nova to me, sustainability is improving the efficiency/maintainability of “something” while minimizing waste. That “something” could be a product, a raw material, or even a talent pool. I can improve sustainability/circularity of a product line through high quality refurbishment vs net new replacement, or measure sustainability of energy management by offsetting fossil fuel use with renewables. I can have a sustainable workforce through strong mentoring, training, and DEI initiatives. Etc.

Just off the cuff, Sustainability means
1) the lack of asymptotically approaching failure
2) over any timescale
3) by measures economic, environmental, social, ethical, and moral.
