     @thomasfuchs And there was a time when FB didn’t have ads either … as they burned through billions in VC money to gain eyeballs.

     A really screwed up business model that distorts the perception of value for the user.

     @thomasfuchs We should remember that AltaVista came before Google. It started as a clean and minimal interface and was even sold as a network appliance. ...#DEC could have been #Google. Think about that one.

     @thomasfuchs At the very beginning they had an “about us” page on Google.com that defiantly said they would never lower themselves to publishing low-end content like weather or stock quotes just to attract traffic. It disappeared not long after they decided ads would be their business model

     i remember a blogpost around 2005 in which a google engineer described how to design a crawler and a search index. that was really impressing.
     main point: you don‘t need bandwidth or high end hardware, you‘ll need a good algorithm. :)
