I acknowledge what I said about capitalism is racist. My comments on ownership were harmful and disrespectful. Which is why I removed them.

To be clear: Capitalism is racist.

Ibram X. Kendi said it best in chapter 12 of his book 📚 How to be an Antiracist which I completely agree with

“Capitalism is essentially racist; racism is essentially capitalist. They were birthed together from the same unnatural causes, and they shall one day die together from unnatural causes.”

Also (thanks @maloki for sharing) there is a great reference from Ruth Wilson Gilmore which goes deep into the complexity of the topic and draws attention to something I also struggle with — how to survive in capitalism without ignoring its affects.

“We can’t undo racism without undoing capitalism”

This is a phenomenal observation which I completely agree with.

    @maloki

In my opinion a lot of the reasoning behind the discussion on how Capitalism is racist stems from Black history, which @mekkaokereke has done a phenomenal job and sharing with us where I have learned a lot.

My life changed after watching 13th, a documentary film by Ava Duvernay which surfaces the criminalized history of mass incarceration as well as economic history of slavery.

We updated RSA host keys at #GitHub

    You can run:

    ssh-keygen -R github.com

to update your known hosts. This command should fix any of the host key or MITM warnings you will inevitably see using git or ssh.

I don’t know who needs to here this but any type of capitalism (especially “Venture Capitalsm”) is all about ownership.

    The keyword is “ownership” folks.

Capitalism is an economic construct based on private ownership. Our interpretation of it here in the U.S. of A was established by a group of criminals who were traumatized by an inability to have what they considered to be “enough ownership” under the British monarch. They literally thought they owned other people.

The difference between ordering a pizza and an “investment” is when you order a pizza you get a fucking pizza.

When you pay for an “investment” or “asset” you trade your money for.. OWNERSHIP — or in the case of our interpretation of capitalism you get stock — or — a “slice of the pie”.

This is why all of these open source licenses are important — because rich people understand this and try to.. you guessed it.. OWN our code just like they try to own everything else.

    and now you know.

      Friedman doctrine
The Friedman doctrine, also called shareholder theory is a normative theory of business ethics advanced by economist Milton Friedman which holds that the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits. This shareholder primacy approach views shareholders as the economic engine of the organization and the only group to which the firm is socially responsible. As such, the goal of the firm is to increase its profits and maximize returns to shareholders. Friedman argues that the shareholders can then decide for themselves what social initiatives to take part in, rather than have an executive whom the shareholders appointed explicitly for business purposes decide such matters for them. The Friedman doctrine has been very influential in the corporate world from the 1980s to the 2000s. However, it has attracted criticism, particularly since the financial crisis of 2007–2008, caused by various financial institutions which engaged in excessive risk for profit maximization, causing the bubble and collapse of the American real estate market that triggered the crisis throughout the wider global economy. The Friedman Doctrine is the Linux kernel of capitalism — it’s where it all started and still runs the show today.

Literally this is the paper that explains why every shitty corporation you’ve ever heard of in your life doesn’t have jack shit levels of accountability to the health of our society.

Corporations only care about their shareholders — the people that OWN the company. Not about the general public. This is why Facebook can waltz out of the courtroom time and time again.

Regardless of your relationship with OWNERSHIP you can still sell services and you can still make money.

Which is exactly what I intend to do with my little mastodon instance.

Literally this entire country is founded on the concept of OWNERSHIP.

    You can own land.
    You can own intellectual property.
    You can own a car.
    You can own animals.
You can own the IP behind trademarks.
You can own the IP behind patents.
You can own the IP behind copyright.

The fediverse chooses co-ops and nonprofits because it’s a model that… wait for it… TAKES AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH AT OWNERSHIP AND IN THE CASE OF A NONPROFIT COMPLETELY BYPASSES THE CONCEPT ALTOGETHER

Also just to be clear I am 100% an investor. I own a lot of stock. Like — a LOT — I love it. I would buy more if I could. I love owning stock.

However that’s not all I do — I also understand the balance and know when and where to apply which construct to which situation. Not everything needs to be solved with ownership. In my opinion, social media and open source software does NOT need ownership to survive.

Now kindly stand the fuck back and watch as I do build this right before your eyes.
