I acknowledge what I said about capitalism is racist. My comments on ownership were harmful and disrespectful. Which is why I removed them.

To be clear: Capitalism is racist.

Ibram X. Kendi said it best in chapter 12 of his book 📚 How to be an Antiracist which I completely agree with

“Capitalism is essentially racist; racism is essentially capitalist. They were birthed together from the same unnatural causes, and they shall one day die together from unnatural causes.”

@mekkaokereke @nova @maloki Your first point can be summed up with one well-known phrase:

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

I'll take an imperfect ally over a perfect enemy (or a neutral third party) any day of the week.

@nova @maloki Social media loves to collapse nuance, and pretend that someone making a correct point, but without careful language (capitalism and racism are inter-twined), is the same as someone intentionally furthering racism. 🤷🏿♂️

When we don't use careful language, the right thing to do is to apologize and acknowledge the harm (done!), and commit to being more careful about language in future (done!).

Doubling down is bad. Acknowledging is good.

      @maloki

In my opinion a lot of the reasoning behind the discussion on how Capitalism is racist stems from Black history, which @mekkaokereke has done a phenomenal job and sharing with us where I have learned a lot.

My life changed after watching 13th, a documentary film by Ava Duvernay which surfaces the criminalized history of mass incarceration as well as economic history of slavery.

Also (thanks @maloki for sharing) there is a great reference from Ruth Wilson Gilmore which goes deep into the complexity of the topic and draws attention to something I also struggle with — how to survive in capitalism without ignoring its affects.

“We can’t undo racism without undoing capitalism”

This is a phenomenal observation which I completely agree with.

Also, rereading the Wikipedia article (every time I do there's more information), the number of Roma in Bulgaria was a state secret. Just like Marx intended, I'm sure :)

@nova I can see how from an American perspective racism and capitalism seem inherently linked, but from the perspective of somebody born in a country where the socialist government expelled 300,000 undesirable people on ethnic and religious grounds*, they definitely seem much more orthogonal.

*straight up ultimatum to leave the country or assimilate into the dominant ethnic group by force, no joke, we barely dodged a Yugoslavia, thank the gods for the Berlin wall falling

        Revival Process
The "Revival Process" or the "Process of Rebirth" (Bulgarian: Възродителен процес, romanized: Vazroditelen protses) refers to a policy of forced assimilation practiced by the socialist Bulgarian government in the 1980s (1984-1989). It was the culmination of a series of repressive assimilationist campaigns directed at the country's Muslim minority. The "Revival Process" was in turn followed by the forced expulsion of over 300,000 Muslims in 1989. Terminology "Revival Process" - Like with the "Big Excursion", the name "Revival Process", under which this campaign of forced assimilation is most well known, is euphemistic and ambiguous. It likewise originated from the statements and official correspondence of the socialist Bulgarian government while it carried out the policy, and its use is disliked by many of its victims. With regard for the contentious nature of the term, "Revival Process" is presented in quotations in this article.Turk/Muslim - While Muslims...
