I thought that "Nuance for the oppressor is the hallmark of the privileged" was pretty dramatic, and I agree strongly.

I thought the idea that programs should say 'user' not 'account' was dramatic, and I thought it was very silly. (The two words do not mean the same thing.)

"Contentious" is the better word, I think, and you should not take it to mean I always disagree – or that it's necessarily a reason to mute someone.

@inthehands @jonn That second one is hella actionable. But to really fix it you need to know how it happened. Has the offending user ever been reported? What did the mods do? Are the mods doing *anything*? If not, why not?

This is assuming we can fix this in code, or even help: some problems are just … people being shitty?

Forty years of debugging user problems makes me absolutely certain: when a user says X is a problem, you're having a good day if X is really the problem. You need to drill down – for example by finding out exactly what they did. *Why* was that a problem for them?

This isn't possible with second hand anecdotes, of course.

This isn't as stupid as it might sound. Folks want to control *when* they see news (not the lighthearted stuff, maybe, but the stuff that might make them down). And folks want to boost news, but their followers will certainly complain if it's not CWd – after all, they didn't follow you.

CWing a post isn't hiding it. It's almost a reflex to click on it. It just stops you seeing it out of the corner of your eye.

@inthehands @zens My touchstone here is the story of a comprehensive survey of IT skills in users using MS Office. Something like 80% of users could not complete a task (add up three columns on a spreadsheet, say) unless there was a button on the toolbar specifically for that task.

The thing is: those are probably your users. Yes, it's infuriating, but if your design doesn't allow for it, that's on you, not them.

@PublicChaffinch this is true although I think there is some very limited, genuine risk of well-meaning moderators screaming "ahh! Nazis" and defederating just because the mods on that instance are a bit new, or it's 4am where they are, or something.
