@simonbp@khleedril@abstractcode@cstross Yes, the TL where the Treaty of Union created a federal state of England, Netherlands, Scotland (& latterly Ireland) resulting in an enduring white supremacist Empire still controlling over three-quarters of the world in the C21st isn't the best one. Especially with the increase in early industrialisation bringing about massive climate change half a century earlier.
@Indyposterboy@CloudyMrs@LillyHerself The "North Britain" strategy. Its return matches the change in Unionism: it used to be that mainstream Scottish Unionists accepted that Scotland was a nation with its own culture, etc. but argued the best option for that nation was to remain within the UK. As that argument has become visibly more untenable, it has switched to a British Nationalist position, that the UK consists of a single British nation, administratively divided into historical regions.
@mykhaylo Look, I'm sure that once they've taken the Sudetenland that will be the end of their territorial demands... Oops, sorry, different century but same bullshit.
The best time for the UK to have become a federal state would have been 1707. The next best time would have been 1800. The next best the 1840s then the 1890s, then 1910s, 1920s, 1950s, 1970s, or 1990s. Yet every time it was raised it never got any traction. So tell me again exactly why independence of the constituent nations isn't a good solution & should be opposed because a federal UK would be better option & solve all the significant democratic & constitutional problems.
@cstross Evil Sturgeon is from the timeline where she joined the (locally dominant) Labour party & worked her way up through its ranks as a staunch unionist, while building up her wealth as a corporate lawyer; then as leader of the Labour party eradicated all traces of socialism while adopting Thatcherite (& further right) policies; now being poised to become PM with a massive majority of Labour-in-name-only MPs. We're fortunate that there's no-one like that in our timeline...
@KimSJ@Yoshi@ChrisMayLA6 Frankly, ending the UK with Scotland & England separating (ideally with NI & Wales getting to decide their choice of destination too) would probably be at least as beneficial to England as to Scotland. Fresh start all around.
@ryanhoulihan Be prepared. Whatever you think you need in an emergency, get (finance permitting). You've listed your medication, & an emergency power system- that's not unwell, it's basic preparedness. Maybe add a small camping-type stove to that list, if you don't already have one.
@cstross Production version versus prototype. (Although the Nostromo is probably a better comparison as a work rather than passenger/consumer production version)
