    It'd be so terribly unfortunate if the first year of Trump's second presidential term was marked by the implosion of the biggest tech industry bubble since cryptocurrencies leading to a stock mrket crash, the collapse of the commercial property market leading to a bank run, Musk-led deregulation of cryptocurrencies leading only to rampant fraud a la Sam Bankman-Fried, and simultaneous trade wars with Europe AND China destabilizing the US dollar, wouldn't it.

    Is this too much to ask for, 2025?

      @swiftone Bear in mind AI in tech is being deployed to *deskill* the employee base, not downsize it. Companies laying off their US work force in favour of LLMs are using LLM tools that require huge amounts of human training, which is carried out by $1/hour workers in the developing world.

      @cstross I'm uncertain what will happen. Previous tech bubbles popped with serious but predictable results. But this time around, tech has ALREADY been doing the layoffs. My friends and students all tell me of a market as bad or worse than after the dot com bubble or Great Recession, but there is still so much money chasing AI. When that tap is turned off, I'm not sure what they'll cut. (One could hope to cut the climate destroying data centers, but I'm sure they'll try to keep some)

      @HighlandLawyer @cstross I blame crypto currencies for taking up all the computation in our simulation. I wouldn't be confused if soon it shrinks the observable universe to make space for more sha256

      @zeri @cstross
      Year is probably inaccurate due to damage to the historical records during the Eugenics War (possibly corruption from LLM "AI")

      @cstross I didn't get my Irish reunification of 2024, yet, so the probable answer is that it is indeed too much to ask for.
