@sampler From a cursory glance it looks like the kind of instance that'd put us down a rung, but I got no problem being friends. :bigbosspw:

@dcc @p @satsuki @prettygood MGS2 is just so damn classic, same with 1. 3 has got so much depth to it it's kind of in it's own leauge, I can't really choose between them. For me it's like, 1 for the characters, 2 for the story, 3 for the gameplay/atmosphere. Peace Walker is a bit of a mixed bag but it's also very fun.

@HatkeshiatorTND @p Really? Looks like it worked once you chmod +x'ed it. If you're making a new script you've gotta make it executable.
If you wanna fuck around without rebooting, you can just mount it in your namespace: gefs -AS -n gefs -f /dev/sdE0/fs; mount -c /srv/gefs /n/gefs

@HatkeshiatorTND @p Yeah I get that, no harm in asking questions and not wanting to be spoonfed is a good sign of a desire to learn. Plan 9 is once of those nice things too where if you RTFM or just dig into the code you'll usually find an answer: it's very well documented and structured. I liked Emacs for the same reason, you can just crack it open any time.

@HatkeshiatorTND can't you just mount with -S?

> at what point would i provide that option? bootargs during boot?
Yeah, I'd think so; like in your plan9.ini you'd have "bootargs=local!/dev/sd00/fs -S". Permissions should work if you set up your box right as an auth server (this is something I forget to do). But I'm running this fossil root without auth and that's fine cause like, it's just serving it locally.
> i haven't played around nearly enough to know. i'm still a newfag.
Fair nuff, I just got back into this shit myself: I hacked up the bootrc to get a fossil root running a couple hours ago. You should ask @p about this stuff, he gave me some advice when I was fucking around with it.

My initial idea was have the linux root somewhere on the file server, say maybe `/usr/linux`, and if I was just running 1 machine I could just mount that over 9P and it'd be fine (in theory) but if I'm running several they're all gonna have different configs, stuff in `/etc` and different programs installed, and I wanna make those changes persistent without doing the lazy thing of just duplicating the root for every machine; I want it to scale (this isn't a problem for the 9 machines, like you pointed out they're designed to just mount their root from somewhere else). Imagine if whenever I got a new raspi or whatever, I could plug it into the switch and it's instantly part of the grid, it's pooled where I can run a command from my terminal and it spins up a cpu server or a linux box, or if I'm using it as a terminal I get a menu selection like you said.
So now, I make a vac of that root, and when a linux box boots it'll have the relevant tools in the initrd so it can spin up a ramfossil and grab the vac and unload it: it'll be either the last backup or the initial vac if it's a new box; then I don't even have to do anything! Then if I want the root as it's running I just mount it from wherever, and I get transparent backups. Shit man, this'd make sysadmining piss easy. I've been going back and forth with @eighthbell about how to make hosting for his forum work for him, and I wouldn't mind providing the tools once I have a real set up: if I can just let him and potentially other people loose on a linux box on the grid then I don't have to worry about anything fucking up; it's basically perfect.
It's been a while since I was last into this stuff. Now I remember why it's so cool.

> have fossil userspace programs in an initrd and just have it talk to venti.
Ok so I'm tired and it took me a few minutes to figure out what I think you're getting at.
So like, in my head I'm imagining it as the cpu servers and linux machines are all diskless and the only difference between them is what payload they get fed on boot. Then the problem is, how do I actually make changes persistent across different machines if they're all mounting the same root fs. Are you saying spin up fossil as the root in memory then unload a venti backup from the file server? That's pretty fuckin' smart.
