I've got the makings for a really barebones dipole, might do an EFHW instead since I think it'll be easier in my situation. When I move back to my dorm I'll just run it out the window down to the ground, it'll be sneaky since I'll be facing the back of the building where no one goes.pistolero likes this. -

That's kind of ridiculous to say: having an opinion informed by experience is not the same as trying to dissuade them from picking a box with one name on it and switching to a box with another name on it. Being a hacker, I would like people to not embarrass the computer.
The Nix guys are misguided; I don't care if he uses the distro, but it is a bad distro. Do you understand the difference between these statements? I don't care if someone decides to start using Red Star Linux, right? (Although that's weird enough that I might take an interest in exactly what he *is* doing.) But if they say it's more secure, I'll argue that point. I'll say what I prefer, you know, if someone says "Oh, I wonder about $x" then I will fill in the blanks if I can. Those are more interesting discussions than "$x bad, $y good" versus "$y bad, $x good". There are tradeoffs and some things that you do with the computer are easy to categorize as retarded; I'd rather talk about tradeoffs. Jojo installed Ubuntu and had questions about how to make Ubuntu do something; I forget what, because 80 people hopped into the thread to tell him to switch to Gentoo or Arch or Debian or Devuan and the goddamn idiot evangelism flooded in and I don't think that helped Jojo learn how to operate his computer.

Nah, when you get too insistent on it, it borders on trying to dissuade.

I dabbled with it a long time ago, and then came back about 8 months ago, this time willing to write my own config from scratch instead of copying some github repo. Stopped distro hopping ever since.
p hates it.
I admit it's far from perfect, and it makes a lot of stuff be way more of a pain in the ass than it should be, but I like the way it is set up, and it scratches my hitch and made me stop distro hopping, so it's OK for me.pistolero likes this. -

It has a little window that can be Linux but there is no way to turn off the goddamn notifications, for one thing. Every time they make a new version, it is a couple of years before someone figures out a way to make the window manager do sloppy-focus. They also keep moving the names of the plists that you can use to disable stuff. None of the UI is Unix-like, which *would* be fine because you could just tell it to run drawterm or iTerm2 full-screen and pretend you're not touching a Mac but the terrible GUI shit keeps intruding.

And it's nearly impossible to get an answer for *why* any particular thing is happening because system logs seem to deliberately fight you when you look into it. Sometimes something will just pin multiple CPUs, and it's impossible to figure out why-- if the service in question is even emitting logs, often they'll be flooded with completely irrelevant details nobody would ever need to know, internal API operations, messages passed between stuff in kernel space that seem intentionally designed to make it hard to figure out what they're actually doing.
it's like a gish gallop that's meant to make you conclude "oh, OK I guess this is too complex for my tiny user brain I better go and just sit over here and accept whatever tim apple wants to give me!"
I never have this problem on linux. If a linux process is pinning a CPU, the logs almost always give hints as to why.pistolero likes this. -

I tried it in 2009 when it was still written in Perl. It was pure sodium fluoride then. I very seriously doubt that the situation has improved now that it has surpassed even zsh's "meme shell" status. The interface to the computer is a programming language: unless it's better for scripting than bash (it is not) or rc (it is definitely not), it is not useful.
I'll use your meme shell when you use Tom Duff's. :tomduff:
