@DemonSixOne@MagicMoshe@phnt@ins0mniak@p@silverpill@zero@Zergling_man@shibao Yeah that's what I'm getting at...just wondering if anyone (still) does it. Like if packet radio's gonna be stuck at mid-80's speeds you might as well use that tech to move bits around, but I don't know if anyone in the ham world's all that interested in that. I've seen PACTOR and winlink in action and it's like "oh yeah check out my $3K 300 baud modem, it can send an email in just 5 minutes!". Stuff like FT8 is cool at a technical level, but as far as I know guys just use it to exchange contacts instead of doing anything interesting with it.
@p@MagicMoshe@phnt@ins0mniak@silverpill@zero@DemonSixOne@Zergling_man@shibao AX.25 is cool and all but it's slow as shit (has anyone tried doing UUCP over AX.25? I'm pretty sure UUCP was designed around X.25 originally) and I wish there was something more established that's faster than that. Meshnet shit seems cool but also a lot of money you've gotta dunk on weird gadgets and I just wanna build my own shit.
Sattelite hams seem to reccomend "arrow antenna" brand but this is the chinese version. Pretty solid
If you want a whip antenna for a baofeng/quansheng then abbree antennas work pretty well. I got the ridiculous 48-inch folding antenna for my UV-K5 and it works like a charm. Lots of gain
@DemonSixOne@MagicMoshe@phnt@ins0mniak@p@silverpill@zero@Zergling_man I've been thinking how easy it would be to set up your own cell tower with just a few SDRs. GSM is pretty easy and I did some research and one of the 4G LTE bands falls right in the 2.4GHz ham band. So in theory there's no legal shit to stop you
So I've heard but like, I think only hospitals use 'em these days.
> And, like...entire radio spectrum is full of really fascinating shit.
A while ago I picked up what sounded like a repeater from the states on 2 metres VHF for a few minutes. I didn't catch the callsign but it said it was part of a network that seems to have the closest node like 400 miles away. Crazy shit.
@ins0mniak@MagicMoshe@phnt@p@silverpill@zero@Zergling_man You ever read about PLA? Old phreak zine from the 90s but instead of being about haxx it was mostly just them going around scamming and fucking with people. Shit's amazing and the guy's still does prank calls, see @r0y PLA014.TXT
@lolitechengineer@Suzu@adequate@p I think @sampler has made a few hot sauces by this point, you can basically grow whatever you want in his climate. Making hot sauce is also only a few degrees away from homebrewing.
