@p I have a bid who was a contractor working for John Deere in Johnston Iowa and was neck deep in all of that shit when it went down. Some day when I have more time I'll get into the greedbag corporate hell that lead to the mess.

@p Yeah Adobe did it because they are Pond Slime looking to lock things down, GIMP did it because... uh.... frankly... I don't know what possessed them to do it. Their "native" output should have been TIFF.
I did find out from Judge Dread that Photoshop started out as an in-house ILM software that they sold off for quick cash. It then near single-handedly built Adobe's empire - and they quickly supplanted the (shitty) behavior of Quark with their own flavor as they took over desktop publishing.
In the mid 90's there was so much goodwill towards Adobe and everybody hated Quark Inc with their stupid keyboard dongles and USB security fobs.
I guess they lived long enough to become the villain.

@p For the small number of things a PSD can do that a tiff can't. (Video mainly, though a PSD and XCF is so shitty at this that no serious person would do such). For pretty much every realistic use-case, there was no good reason, to be honest.

@p XCF is the gimp version of a PSD for most practical purposes. You can save layers, layer style, paths and color channels in a TIFF, XCF and PSD. XCF and PSD can also save video, which is really where they have anything over a tiff.
If you want to open a XCF file in photoshop, you can download a plug-in or, better yet, save the XCF as a tiff - it will preserve, at a minimum, your layers. Even Corel Draw will accept tiffs.

@p Yeah a tiff can preserve all the layer, filter and style data a .psd does. And you can import it into pretty much anything. I don't know of any professional graphics software that will not accept a tiff file.

@p I've always been mystified why anybody uses .psd when .tiff can literally do exactly the same thing at every level, including saving "photoshop only" layer styles and effects. And you can dump a tiff in pretty much any serious graphics program with minimal fiddling.

@p LGR had mentioned that "recycled" chips and components were a problem in a lot of these retro system - while holding a handful of popped capacitors.
