At least traditional religions (I.E Christianity, Judaism, Islam) attempt to justify themselves historically. Though they still ultimately fail to deliver the burden on proof.
That being said, most Christians adhere to the rules extremely inconsistently regardless, and have a myriad of conflicting beliefs. -

I think that's unfair to say, some religions definitely evolved 'naturally', especially ancient forms of religion like Paganism in Europe or Shintoism in Japan. Even the religions formed more recently, like Talmudic Judaism or Christianity it's hard to say were definitely about power or a desire to control. -

There has been, of course. But how fair is it to say it started as that? Christians were persecuted in early Rome. Jews were persecuted in parts of the Roman empire, hell they went to war with Hadrian. There were people in the past willing to kill and die for these beliefs, not for land or money, but genuinely over the belief itself. -
